5 out of 5 stars Excuse the pun, but you'd be daft not to...   November 25, 2002

Whatever your opinion on Daft Punk's apparent change of style from Homework to Discovery, it is undeniable that both are fantastic records, which have influenced contemporary electronic music to a massive extent. With Homework, 'les Daft' followed the Chicago house blueprint and added the catchiest melodies, whilst still remaining credible. The single, 'Da Funk' sounded like nothing else on earth when it erupted in 1996, and its character slow, steady funk thump and acid squelch still souds marvellous today. Although Rock and Roll and Rollin & Scratchin do go on a bit, and are not always suited to home listening, this is a tight album, full of classic Daft grooves, the influences of which are everywhere to hear today, from Madonna to Felix Da Housekatt. At over 70 minutes, it doesn't get tiresome, which is a rare feat for an LP of instrumental house music.
Between then and the release of the sophomore work, Discovery, the duo concentrated on their own labels, Roule and Crydamoure, even better than Daft Punk's output in my opinion, the former label spawning 1998's massive Stardust single, with Daft member Thomas Bangalter a producer on that seminal track.
However, when 'One More Time' arrived in 2000, many Daft Punk fans were somewhat frustrated that their 'heroes' had opted to go down an obviously commercial route, returning from the 'wilderness' (despite their having been busy with their labels) with what amounted to little more than Stardust part 2. The sound they had created had moved on, and although they claimed to have created the comeback single months earlier, Cher's use of the autotuner vocals proved an embarassment to many, who saw Daft Punk as being behind the times...
Fortunately, they saved some of their best ever tracks for Discovery, a massive technicolour opus, wearing its influences on its sleeve, but creating something entirely new once more. In that context, One More Time even seemed to fit in, with its call to arms opening the album, which then startled from the electro beats and over-the-top guitar riffage of Aerodynamic, to the spluttering warped funk and autotuner (turned up to 11) of Harder Better Faster Stronger, through to the Roule-sounding Diana Ross cut-up of High Life and the superbly catchy and strangely melodic Todd Edwards collaboration, Face to Face, they proved that their comeback mattered. Would the 'electroc**sh movement' have come to the fore so strongly without this album? I somewhat doubt it.
Whatever your opinion on Daft Punk's transition from stripped-down filtered funk kids to cartoon concept artists, they have still produced two of the finest dance albums of the last ten years.
Together, at this price, it is a must buy. But if you haven't got them already by now...What have you been listening to these past 5 years? And why?

3 out of 5 stars This shows just how much Daft Punk have improved   December 3, 2001

I bought this to save getting the two separate albums which inevitably saved money. However I now think I should have perhaps just bought the album "Discovery" because the earlier tracks from disc 2 just aren't as good. Having said that, disc 1 is fantastic!
