A mixed bag but some great stuff May 24, 2007 Mr. Stuart Bruce (Bristol, UK) This is N-Trance's second album and you can tell they weren't really sure what direction they should be going in. Or maybe the band wanted to go one way and the record label (or the audience) wanted something else. So what you get on here is a mish-mash.
Particularly on their first album "Electronic Pleasure" N-Trance clearly had a good line in what was loosely called 'stadium house' music, following in the footsteps and in a way the sound of bands like The KLF, the Shamen and Utah Saints. However apart from the smash hit "Set You Free", their follow-up attempts in this vein didn't do too well- "Tears In The Rain" (on this album) and "The Mind Of The Machine" (featuring respected actor Stephen Berkoff on 'narration') were similar-ish-sounding singles which flopped. Kelly Llorrenna, the singer on "Set You Free" and most of N-Trance's other songs, went on to have more success in her own right.
Meanwhile their cheesy-disco-cover "Stayin' Alive" from the first album was their other big hit, and they had more luck following this track- their versions of "D.I.S.C.O.", "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Paradise City" (all from this album) were moderate hits. Personally I think their follow-up attempts in this disco-rap vein start getting a bit naff after a while.
Album tracks like "Amadeus" and "Andare Con Me" show that N-Trance had a lot of energy, had a strong love of rave music, weren't taking everything too seriously, and had some musical quality about them which sadly the endless disco-revamps disguised from the public.
It's not a consistently good album but it definitely has its moments. Personally my favourite is probably "Feel Good".
There's another version of this album with 13 tracks, which is a cheeky re-release containing all 11 original album tracks plus the two big hits from their first album, "Set You Free" and "Stayin' Alive".
After this I believe that N-Trance as a 'band' gave up but one of the original members kept plugging away, starting with a remix and re-release of "Set You Free" around 2002 which then allowed N-Trance to turn into a predictable commercial trance outfit with guest female vocalists.
N-Trance: Dance Act or Covers Band?? November 8, 2001 I'm glad "Set You Free" was re-released as a single a couple of months ago, because I really liked that track. But after hearing this album, I have to ask this question: "What are N-Trance supposed to be?".I first heard of N-Trance when they released their rap version of "Staying Alive" (with Ricardo Da Force). When they brought out "Do You Think I'm Sexy?" and "D.I.S.C.O", I imagined them to be a 'covers band'. Then they bring out all these dance singles! The CD "Happy Hour" is a mixture of covers and dance music. The oldies given the 'rap' treatment are "Do You Think I'm Sexy?", "D.I.S.C.O" and Superstition". Then there's a mellow rap version of Mr Mister's "Broken Dreams". But the best cover version of all is undoubtedly their take on 'Guns N Roses' "Paradise City". This really has to be heard to be believed! As for the dance tracks, well, I bought this album thinking it was all cover versions. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I'd have bought it knowing more than half the album was dedicated to dance. Still, there's a few good tracks on here: "Tears In The Rain" and "The Mind Of The Machine" are my faves. But to make a better album, N-Trance really do need to make up their minds about what musical direction they want to follow because this 'half-and-half' concept just doesn't work. Jon.
Now this album rocks!!! September 6, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, someone please tell me what happened to N-Trance. Their older singles used to be so popular - "Set You Free" got to No.2 in the U.K charts, and their rap cover of the Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive" got to No.1 and is still played in all the discos now. However (and I have to be honest here) now they're lucky if they get in the charts at all. Despite this, they still produce great music, and they prove it with this album. It has something for everyone in here. Two of their more popular singles on this album (both covers but still) "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "D.I.S.C.O" are fantastic pop/club crossover songs to play at places like discos. Their proper club single "Tears In The Rain" is another brill. song, and there are more club tracks like "Andare Con Me" and "Feel Good" The full 8-odd minute version of the more techno-style "The Mind Of The Machine" is one of the most atmospheric songs I've ever heard. For more metal fans, the cover of Guns N' Roses' "Paradise City" should suffice. Even fans of love songs get a look in with the beautiful "If". N-Trance really haven't gone a foot wrong with this album, so I suggest anyone who's anyone gets it!!!
Happy Hour rocks! D-I-S-C-O! October 13, 2000 Every song on this great album should be a chart-topping single, and most of them are! Where to start... Tears in the rain is my favourite but paradise city and DISCO hold their own! Wicked album! release another one soon n-trance!
