Amazon.co.uk Review In 1999, more than ever before, the sound of the clubs was the sound of the charts. A heady mix of trance, house and big beat, it made for a thumping year, and on the Millennium Edition of Ministry of Sound's Annual, Judge Jules and Tall Paul sum it up over the course of two discs. It's an ambitious undertaking, but the pair pull it off: all the hits are here (really: Chemical Brothers' "Hey Boy Hey Girl", Fatboy Slim's "Right Here Right Now", Moloko's "Sing it Back", Eclipse's "Make Me Love You" and Funkstar De Luxe's take on Bob Marley's "Sun is Shining" all manage to show up on the first half of disc one) and most of them come in new mixes that make them easy to listen to again and again. Breaking up the hits are plenty of coulda-beens, shoulda-beens; Judge Jules' picks--like the mix itself--are a bit smoother than Tall Paul's, but anyone seeking to re-create a great 1999 club night should be more than happy with this collection. --Randy Silver

Great 90's character, and 'should' have been incredible January 1, 2007 T. Clarke (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As with any big event these days, the commerciality surrounding it sky rockets. With this the topic, The Annual Millennium Edition springs to mind quickly. The year 2000 was seen as the biggest since sliced bread, and everyone was raving about this 'event' which would simply pass in a matter of seconds (1 second to be exact...). It was a crazy time, but i'll admit, I loved it, and the dance music from 1999 was simply brilliant. The reason why this album springs to mind is because after all the hype and craziness, the outcome was pretty average, maybe slightly dissapointing from MoS. Their are many reasons for this, but problem lies heavily on just couple of things. Firstly, MoS where heading in a new route - commerciality rather than pride. Ok, this was only their 5th annual, so it wasn't so full of cheese like now, but the tracklisting, though good in parts, could have been so much better. Their are toom many fillers on the album that could have been replaced with other songs that were blasted out this year. For example, 'Get Get Down' was a massive hit, yet absent, as was The World, Hear You Calling, Gouryella, and other trance/house songs. This was 'the' year of trance, but this feels like just a taster. The other problem lies in the mixing, and mixes of songs. While I've always been a fan of Judge Jules, I can say this is a brilliant mix from him on CD1 - the way he arranged the first 3 songs is terrific, and as you may, could easily be one of the best example of mixing on an MoS album. Theirs mainly house on this disc, and it feels very funky, with songs like Turn Around, You Don't Know Me, Feel The Same, and lots of others. Happiness Happening is a brilliant song, and its a actually the best mix (Lange mix that doesnt go straight into the beat after vocals). I would say though that the mix of 9pm could have been better - it was Radio 1's most requested song of the year, and its original mix should be here. Better Off Alone just cuts short of 3 minutes long, which is shocking, as its been cut in parts for some reason. After the mess Tall Paul made of The Annual Ibiza 99, I wasn't suprised to hear his disc on this album wasn't so much a massive improvement, thought songs here actually make sense when mixed into each other. It does though feel rushed, as if to strectch the 1 hour 20 minute cd limit as far as you could go, with half the songs under 3 minutes long. Sanctuary was a fine song, and so too were many other trance tunes - Everyday, Bullet In the Gun, but the mixing does let them down at times. I sometimes feel Tall Pauls beat-matching sounds like somebody jumping up and down constantly on a hollow wooden floor - very annoying and not clean sounding. He's not too bad on this album, but still manages to mess up the mixing of Toca Me into Feel The Beat, sounding like his cross fader was rather stiff. But overall, this is a descent album, I can't complain too much. As one reviewer said, this was a little bit of a tease, and I'll agree, but having said that this album does have a fine party atmosphere to it that was perfect for Millennum. And thats where the album fits into place - its not like other Annuals that simply rounded up the years clubland. This was compiled to be the best party album of the year to tie in with end of year celebrations, and for that, I give it 10/10. Its when you realise this, you understand that maybe many of those good songs just wouldnt have fitted in with the albums character. So, it the album has its problems - rushed mixing + too many fillers = shorter songs, messy at times on cd2, but this said, theirs no denying the value of this album. Their are 'suprisingly' songs here you won't find on many other albums from this year, and its solid character wraps up what was a crazy year, reflected a good interesting booklet, and a great silver book-style case (special edition). So, if your looking for a good New Years Party album, this is the one. But as you may find, it could be quantity of songs rather than the quality of them which leaves you thinking "I could have rounded up 1999 much better. For starters...."
Fantastic CD! best Dance CD in 1999! November 6, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the Annual to have out of all the good and awful ones! it gives you a very good reflection of 1999. Ok some of the tracks are pathetically short! but the tunes are there and so is the mixing! Wish it was still this good nowadays huh?
A bit of a tease, really. August 11, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great stuff from Jules with lot's of those anthemic numbers we know and love but really quite shamefully short versions of them. It's like they're mixing against the clock and to the death! Oddly, this fact proves to be A Very Good Thing as far as the Tall Paul CD is concerned..... Overall; not quite a complete waste - but almost.
For those who can remember the summer. In style. March 7, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a quality album. There is a well mixed up track list that has a range for all. It caters from the budding clubber, to all those who trip the light fantastic in their room. If you DON'T like this album and made for tunes, there is something wrong with YOU!
A complete summary of 99, all the top tunes March 6, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If this doesn't bring back memories of 99, nothing will. It's packed with all the classic tracks from 99. The Judge mixes it up on the first CD proving that he can mix almost anything together, whilst the second CD is just totally banging with track after track of euphoric beats mixed by Tall Paul.
