hmmm... not convinced July 14, 2008 db (UK) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this as a replacement for my minidisc, but the recordings have loads more hiss than the minidisc, when you record with a microphone, and subsequently is a bit of a let down...
For lining-in things, it's brilliant, and being able to drag and drop via USB is also brilliant. This side of things makes it much better than minidisc. Hiss and noise isn't a problem here.
But wandering about recording everyday stuff with my usual mics, seems to show up much more hiss than I ever got with minidisc.

I bought this device after having several poor attempts at recording DJ mixes onto laptops. Recording quality on laptops is poor and I found processor/hard drive noise interfered with the audio (especially in the quiet parts). After reading the spec's, I decided to invest in the Microtrack 2.
The first thing to note is that the unit does NOT come with any memory card - you need to buy a compact flash card from elsewhere before you can use this. I got a 2Gb Sandisk card from Amazon for just over 10 which works well. The second thing to note is that the Microtrack's line inputs are " TRS sockets, and not the normal phono (RCA) inputs your mixer might have. This is because the device supports Microphones requiring phantom power, that use this connector. Therefore a converter lead is required (I got one from solotechnic.co.uk for 3 inc. postage!). So once you have the required extras, you are ready to roll.
The device is pocket-sized, and is very light considering the power it has. I was quite surprised as I thought it would be more bulky. It certainly doesn't feel as expensive as it costs...!
The Microtrack lets you select which audio format you will record to (MP3/WAV) and also various quality settings for each. Given the large memory card I bought, I chose MP3 then ramped up the quality to the maximum for CD recording (44.KHz + 320kps). The device kindly reported that I had 14 hours of recording to play with, so I began my mix marathon!
Another point to note is that the memory card uses the FAT32 format. This gives a maximum file size of 2GB. Therefore, if you have a larger card you will still only get a maximum recording size of 2GB. The instruction manual states that the device will then automatically create a new file and continue recording, but you will lose a tiny chunk of your recording during the changeover process. Note that this is not a fault of the device, but the audio format. Perhaps NTFS would have been a better choice, and I don't know why this wasn't chosen by M-Audio.
The controls on the device are incredibly simple to use. I had a brief look at the PDF instruction manual and had figured it out in no time.
After recording, you simply plug the device into your PC/Mac and copy the audio file(s) (nothing to install). The audio recording quality is crystal clear with no artifacts or noise. You can then use the Audacity editor (supplied) to Normalise the audio (this expands the audio to the maximum dynamic range giving the best volume levels).
I simply dropped the MP3 on the desktop, then used Notepad to write a .CUE Sheet (see Wikipedia - this file format is used to create track break/title information) and then opened that file in Nero (not supplied) for an instant CD mix.
I recommend this device without any reservation. It is superb quality, easy to use, and will be used by me to record my mixes for many years to come.
