 Not Suitable For Bluetooth Headphones or Even Any Data Transfers at 2m+ November 17, 2008

I bought this and was supplied the Veho Bluetooth Micro USB Adaptor along with the BlueSoleil software. Noticing it supports A2DP was a bonus meaning that I could connect it to my Sony Bluetooth headphones (Sony DRBT50B) made it ideal as well as stop pratting around with cables for my Nokia 3109, and Sony Ericson k800i.
Installing the drivers and software was easy enough but then navigating the menus and trying to connect devices was a lot of effort. At first its not clear what is or isn't connected, and you need to familiarize yourself with BlueSoliel's "Services" logos to know what its decided you can and can't do with the Bluetooth device you've just connected. It's not clear at all. I had my mobile and headphones connected to the PC. Then I switched off my headphones but the desktop software showed them as stil being connected!? Confused I went to the headphones properties and it said it was disconnected. Ok...
This leads to a music problem where I am using the sony headphones with Windows Media player (or anything that outputs audio from the PC). Connecting and listening works fine. Then I switch off the headphones and make sure the Headphones show as "disconnected" in BlueSoleil. Next I try to play the WMP music through my usual speakers... and nothing!!! After a few tests and checks it appears that the music is trying to be played through the BT headphones. BlueSoleil had messed up my preferred audio device - even though the BT headphones aren't there. Simply exiting BlueSoleil and looking for changing audio settings in Control Panel won't help. So this results in me restarting Windows XP.
In terms of data transfer rate - the back of the packaging said the maximum transfer rate is 1Mps. Not the end of the world if your sending pictures to and from your mobile but you will have to put up with slower transfer speeds espcially for other larger items. And dont even think about using this with your laptop & mobile as a GPRS connection! You could get 2-3Mps on full-sized BT USB adaptors as well as other small BT adaptors that can push 2Mps.
However the most notable worst aspect is the small form means it will naturally have a smaller antanae/aerial. The range is given at 20m which I can live with (other full-size adaptors give 50m-100m)m but this 20m only really works within a line-of-sight!!!
Take the Sony BT headphones for example. I am sitting about 2m away from my PC with this adaptor in the front USB port. Music is playing fine from Windows Media Player. The aerial for the headphones is on the right-side of the right ear piece. If I turn my head right - that will brake the signal - at a distance of about 2m this adaptor is unable to pass a signal through/around my head!? As a point of comparison I have left my K800i playing in my bedroom in the loft and have carried on listening to music without issue in toilet (approx 5m with a 10" timber, capret and plaster floor/ceiling in between).
This has effectively reduced this adpator to just being an infra-red adaptor.
I will buy a full-sized one now just to ensure I get the functionality.

I don't know what everyone is prattling on about drivers for, this dongle works under Windows XP SP3 without and need for 3rd party drivers, FACT. I plugged it in and after a minuite or so it was working, no need for drivers, no need to go on the Internet, and no need to pay for anything. As a matter of fact the dongle didn't even come with any drivers, because it doesn't need them.

Well, the title says it all.
Using Vista Home Premium, this worked right out of the box, and within a couple of minutes after finding the right drivers for my phone, I was using my W810i to control my PC.
File transfer is pretty fast, what you'd expect from Bluetooth, and the range is great, even when plugged in at the back of my PC.

Dongle is a nice small size. It installed OK. The two biggest problems are the the drivers supplied on the disc are BlueSoleil 2.6.0.9 Release 070606. There are newer drivers available from BlueSoleil, 6.2.227.11 but BlueSoleil want 19.95 for these drivers which will give 'free' updates for a year. Also, when transfering lots of photo's from my Sony Ericsson W800i, after about 15-25 photo's the connection drops and has to be restarted which is a pain in the butt. Summary: nice small size; good for basic small file transfer; not good for big file transfers; no free BlueSoleil driver updates.

This is cheap but not a great bargain. I installed the adapter and the software (v2), which turns out to be limited in functionality, and a pop-up appears asking if you want to upgrade the software to v6, which i wanted to do to gain all the functions. Clicking this takes you to the bluesoliel website, who want to charge 20 euros to upgrade the drivers. This is totally unacceptable.
The supplied software itself is limited, and will not function with the sony ericsson pc suite or the remote control feature on my sony c702. The product is advertised as supporting A2DP music streaming but this option was 'greyed out' in their software, even though my phone supports it. I uninstalled the drivers and let it function with just the windows vista drivers, which gives me the functionality i wanted except A2DP.
My advice is to stay well clear of this and purchase something else.
