Worth it for Tong's "mix" June 14, 2008 kc (Tampa, FL USA) I bought this back in 95 as a regular of Cream at Nation and was more of a Justin Robertson, Boy George fan as opposed to the front room stuff, but this mix brings it all back.
For those who haven't heard this yet, it's worth the money for Pete Tong's mix alone. Especially the end of "Always Something There.." by Tin Tin Out where you can hear the record speed up towards the end because the next track "Only Me" is obviously too fast to mix into, then "Always" ends and he quickly has to cut into "Only Me" - pretty badly... lol The same happens with the next track too where you can hear "Sound of Eden" spin up... (Still, this shows how fast the direct drive 1200's started, I guess, which was pretty fast)... Those were the days! And it happened live too quite a lot with him. Watching the crowd dance in time, then watching them all look up to the booth because they're not sure what's going on is always fun. :/
Quality mixing this isn't, for that check out Renaissance Mix Collection with Sasha and Digweed, but for a laugh and some good old tunes, this is worth it.
Excellent compilation May 31, 2008 Dangermouse (UK) Cream live delivers what you'd expect and does not disappoint. Many a happy hour has been spent listening to this with my faithful sidekick Penfold.
Live house music at its best! The 90's glory days.... December 28, 2006 T. Clarke (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Cream Live vol.1 brings back many memories of times gone by, from an era that I wish could just fly back to - the 90's. Along with this album was The Annual vol.1, from Ministry of Sound, which basically wrapped up the year in clubland. And I was so impressed with that, I can remember going out to buy this album. While the 2 albums represent a year of fantastic music, they both have quite diffenrent styles. This is just classic house music, and theirs a collection of inspired mixing, and breathtaking song choice, from the beautiful Odyssey To Anyoona, to the soothing Sexual. The best piece of mixing that springs to mind is between Always and Only Me - two timeless house tunes that cleverly run into each other. The choice of tracklisting gives it a party amosphere overall I feel, though like I said, its a mixed bag. CD1 seems to be the most organized mix, and probably the best, while CD2 lets very loose towards the end, and like me, you'll probably be confused by the tracklisting, but you'll soon get used 'Voodoo Ray' actually being the end of the previous track.. i'm sure theirs some logic somewhere! But those final few tracks on the album really wrap things up with some good progressive mixing. Whats more, this was mixed by 4 top Dj's - Oakenfold, Tong, Robertson and Park. With a line up like that, the outcome could never have a boring piece of mixing. And that's what makes this album so good - the mixing is so inspired at times. The only suprises I got were of a few mixes - that being the choice of New Orders True Faith which I felt was slightly mellow when compared to the uplifting original, and the mix of Things of can only get better, which has its main rhythm changed. But these slight niggles don't make it a bad album at all. The fact that its live makes a big difference to the overall character of the album, something we miss today. Just hear the volume level bounce up and down at the end of Only Me, or Sound of Eden. Here the crackles of the vinyl in Voodoo Ray (arguably, one of the best tracks of the 90's) and the bass rumble in Always... this is truly authentic. The stand out tracks noteably include 'Always' with its hair-raising moment at the start where a synth sound brings out a fantastic Rhtyhm, 'How Can I love You More', also present on Renaissance vol.1 was an essential choice - what a lovely song, and shows how club music had such variety back in the 90's, as it neither break or full beat, just a nice 'finger tapper' (as I like to call 'em!). If your looking for more of a club atmosphere and uplifting album, I think Renaissance Vol.2 (released the year after...) is better, though if you just want a taste of what classic house music was like, this is your album. Quality mixing, great song choice, and nice packaging make it a evening summer album worth getting. NB: The special edition has a rubber sleeve, though is 'very' rare. Standard edition has a fold out card Digipack. The one Amazon sell is the original 1995 issue - no changes at all.

One of the best club compilations of all time. Probably my most listened to cd and still not bored! If you are a fan of house from this era you should be thankful it is still available and buy it.
