A reminder of dance music with variety May 18, 2007 T. Clarke (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The year in clubland in 1997 may have mixed opinions for many people. To hear the difference between 1996 and this year when you look back is very evident, and '97 was inspired by lots of break-beats, acid house, garage, and the begining of what seemed like a legendary 2 of so years of trance. This very first edition of Pete Tongs 'Essential Selection' reminds of us of this variety in music. The album was released in the summer 1997, and so leaves behind the darker rhythms during the winter, and has lots of fun, funky sounds. Still, theirs no escaping those dirty beats - 'Dirt' ironically one of those songs, but then contrasted by 'Casual Sub' after with its fun pipe sounds. 'Free' was a popular floorfiller this year, and so takes place here, and is one of the most memorable songs of the 90's. 'Belo Horizonti' could easily fill that category too - another great feel good tune for the summer. Free actually brings in the regular 4/4 beats, and so after then, its just pure funky house! The 2nd cd is more up tempo and would seem to be the great way to end a party. Need I list the memorable tunes? 'Flaming June' by BT - one of the most loved songs on clubland takes a perfect place as the 2nd to last track on the album, while previous songs keep making you want to get up and dance -'Get Up! Go Insane!' being on of those songs (though MoS' The Annual vol.3 had a much better version) and 'Discohopping'. As you'd expect, the mixing from Pete Tong has lots of variety, and is perfect for the album. The great thing is that it just sounds so 'authentic' unlike todays dance albums that sound so soul-less. This however, as suggested by the logo on the cover, sounds like its just come fresh of Radio 1 from a summer event! In comparison to other albums released this year, this probably comes top. The Annual vol.3 was 50/50, as the first CD (by that man again - Pete Tong!) was unbeatable, but the 2nd was too dark and boring. Cream Anthems 97 was good too, the darker side to 1997, but this surely comes top. This album surely now represents, what was, a big transition is dance music. Whether people think it was for the good or a bad time, is their opinion. In my eyes however, its one of the freshest, feel-good, get up and dance albums you can buy. 1997 may have lost touch with house alot, but this only allowed artists to bring in the fresh and funky sounds, some very euro sounding like Belo Horizonti. And this is why 1997 was such a great summer - if theirs one album your going to get to review the sounds of summer 97, it has to be this! As the booklet says.. "1997 - Its all about da funk"...
