1 out of 5 stars ohh dear!!   January 27, 2008
Mr. L. C. Bottrill (cornwall england)
really dont know what has happened to PVD, this album really doesn't live up to seven ways, out there and back and 45rpm! i am really not liking all the vocals he has started to use in nearly every song on this album...sorry!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you like PVD buy this. If you like trance buy this.   January 25, 2008
Marcus Waller (Herts, UK)
This is a fantastic album that continues where the others left off. The music is uplifting but each track seems to tell its own story. There are some slightly darker moments too. PVD has matured more with this album but he is in good form. If you like PVD buy this. It's a good album and was well worth the wait.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing...   January 8, 2008
Milan M. Bakrania (Perth, Western Australia)
It's just Like I have heard, a milliion and one times by so many reviewers, about so many artists... "Die hard fans will argue but..."!
such is the case with this cd... There was a time when PVD used to make music that was well ahead of his time... This album was beyond dissapointing... appart from the fact that most of the tracks are commercially packaged on this cd, (ie they are 4 minutes or less), the sound itself is not the original PVD sound! The album is rather dull, and commercial... its what you'd hear on a rather b-grade radio station, playing all that charty, slap in your face type of stuff! there are one or two tracks that seem to be momentarily suspended in his original style, and then with a flick of a switch, it changes back to waht it started with... As for the rest of the album... well... nuff said...! Rest assured I won't be as breathless in terms of waiting for his next work... PVD has officially lost his touch and gone commecial! I used to be one of those "Die-Hard" fans, who wanted to get all his promos, & Special edition CDs, & Rarites... Not anymore! There is better stuff to own, not only in this Genre!

His style was proffessional at one stage in his life, but this IS NOT his best work... Try "45RPM", & "7 Ways" instead...

If you like this cd you might want to try any other Ex - Trance Artist gone totally off the wall Like Armin Van Buuren, or Tiesto...

Good luck in your search!

1 out of 5 stars Another disappointment from a fading god...   December 31, 2007
Mr. R. Harrop (Stoke Newington)
Previous album reflections at least had the benefit of a few standalone standout tracks - 'Crush' in particular, but sadly this album has none. PVD's seeming obsession with male vocals is no longer funny - some of the tracks are actually embarassing and wouldn't suprise one if they turned up on a DJ Sammy album.

After Tiesto's abysmal 'Elements of Life' album it seems the top two trance DJ's in the world are running out of ideas.

A real shame...

Don't bother with the album unless you like 90's eurotrance

5 out of 5 stars A Quality Production   December 13, 2007

It is important that your expectations are correctly aligned before evaluating this compilation. I love banging trance mixes, especially those by Mr Van Dyk himself. But that is not what this album is about. Fear not though. You will or should derive much pleasure from this.

Listen to it expecting a full on DJ set and you will be disappointed. This production should be judged for what it is, an artist album by a talented musician and producer that is further enhanced due to his being a very, very good DJ.

In my opinion this is an exquisitely produced collection of tracks, thoughtfully ordered and mixed to create a coherent masterpiece.

The title of the album "In Between" provides a clue to its intentions as you might expect. Paul is, I think trying to bridge the gap between popular music and dance. Criticism may be levelled at it for being an opportunistic attempt at "mainstream" but maybe this would be a)churlish and b)missing the point.

What you get is a universally listenable to collection of tracks featuring esteemed vocalists that are pleasingly different. These have been infused with a distinctly PVD sound, the driving bassline which his followers will be familiar with and the release is structured so that the listener is taken on a journey, just as they would be if listening to one of his live sets.

The rise and fall of pace, progression that the mind expects, beauty, peace and PVD basslines are all to be found and exquisitely timed throughout the album as one would expect from arguably the world's best DJ.

The music builds from the opening track "Haunted" into the catchy White Lies, Jessica Sutta from the Pussy Cat Dolls providing the vocals. A harder dance edge starts to appear by track 4 with an almost David Guetta vs the Egg kind of sound to it.

This fades into an inspired mix into "Get Back" with a lovely bassline taking you by delicious surprise, the second the track number flicks to `5'. For me, this is my favourite moment of the entire CD, such is the "hold up, it's kicking off now" kind of feeling that it inspires. This song is stand out for me, just beautiful other worldly vocals that provide godly interludes to the banging bassline that will transport you to another dimension where you are standing in a field, your hands in the air, surrounded by 10,000 people. That love you :o)

Then we settle into familiar PVD territory a bit with the track "Far Away", a collaboration with the Italian trance producer, Giuseppe Ottaviani, himself a producer of some fantastic tracks, most notably Through Your Eyes (listen to before you die). Far Away has a kind of Nothing But You feel about it. Indeed I have heard a set with these two tracks mixed together. This is followed up with the deceptively titled "Another Sunday". This is a nice hard PVD track with a nice chunky thumping bassline.

This is followed by a cheeky transition into a contrasting track, Talk in Grey, a track with a different feel and odd but entirely pleasant vocals, courtesy of Ryan Merchant.

I am most aware that a track by track commentary may become tedious,. Let it suffice that the compilation continues to along it's interesting and varied path to its conclusion via the title track(nice) and another collaboration with Wayne Jackson, Stormy Skies, my least favourite track, New York City, finishing off with Fall With Me, vocals by of Talking Heads' David Byrne.

In conclusion, this album had a long and intense gestation resulting in a quality production that merits proper and objective listening. Recommended. Enjoy.
