Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Paul van Dyk spent most of the 1990s perfecting a strain of credible, melodic Euro-trance that connected with clubbers all over the globe. Having honed his style and established a trademark sound, the East German DJ brings it all together on this, an album the over-zealous call the first great dance record of the 21st century. It begins in fine fashion with the cool break-beat shimmer of "Vegas", swiftly followed by "Pikes", a valve-pumping Ibizan knees-up that's a tribute to the island's fabled hotel. So far, so good--this is top-notch progressive house that's guaranteed to make them move. However, if you're expecting more of the same, beware, because from here on in it's out with the glo-sticks and on with the face paint as a succession of cliched trance anthems rudely gatecrash the party. From the lunar-landings vibe of "Avenue" through to the sweet pop lilt of "Face To Face", hypnotic riffs, sanguine chords and hollow, metronome beats take centre stage. Van Dyk's no ATB, but ultimately this is just as one-dimensional. --Paul Tierney

5 out of 5 stars Addicted!!   June 13, 2008

I have a CD car changer, and all of the CD slots are reserved for PVD, which include "Out There and Back", "Seven Ways" and "The Politics of Dancing". I haven't changed the CDs for YEARS. Listen to them EVERYDAY! I am completely transfixed! Great to listen to on the drive journey to-from work. This CD is Highly Recommended!

this is one of the top ten discs for me. a truly inspired set of tracks. so many things work so well here and the result is one of the most musical trance discs ever produced. if you think you dislike trance, buy this and you will understand.

5 out of 5 stars PVD is simply the "dream-trance" god.   March 20, 2004

Basically, this album is for the people who love trance but either can't or don't want to go to an overcrowded overpriced dingy club to listen to decent trance. I have seen him playing twice and even though he might not dance and jump around like Paul Oakenfold he is the only one who can be compared with Oakie, in mixes, style and choice of tunes and mood. If you, JUST, like trance then this is the album that will make you love it. And if you really want to see him doing his magic then you should go to one of the summer festivals, i.e. Gatecrasher summer sound system, creamfields... etc

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous, ensorcelled and conspicuous CD!   March 17, 2002

At first I did not quite like the album, or, should I say, did not pertinently understand its ulterior motive and vastly clandestine, surreptitious quiddity. I was 'out (of) there' for a wee time. Maybe because I was not predisposed to 'Paul Van Dyk' at that moment. However, all has changed for the better, for both of us - me, yours truly and Mr Van Dyk, after the second inclined listening to this stentorian recording. I sojourned 'back' to Paul Van Dyk, like a dog returns to its vomit. Undoubtedly, I like this CD better than the nouveau arrive 'The Politics of Dancing' but would also counsel you the supra double CD for your listening elation, especially if you are a vivacious adherent of trance music sage savants, say for instance Christopher Lawrence, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten and Mark Shimon then obviously, you cannot miss such a bona fide tour de force in trance music. All the fun begins with the second track and oozes throughout the whole CD. Even if you have never been to a nightclub before and incessantly danced the whole night out, you would unwillingly start to dance whilst listening to this Paul Van Dyk-ish piece de resistance and maybe subconsciously would feel like seeing Paul Van Dyk play one of his unforgettable DJ sets around the world, not matter whether it is Berlin, London or New York.

Like I said, 'Stupendous, ensorcelled and conspicuous CD!' Should I say more, I am most intrigued?

5 out of 5 stars Lovely atmospheric, uplifting   January 22, 2002

One of my favourite albums. If you like trance, this a must buy. Very relaxing to listen to but also one you can dance to. Lovely emotional (without sounding soppy), uplifting touch - I *particularly* like Face To Face, Out There And Back and We Are Alive but there is not one track I dislike.
