Awesome March 13, 2004 Dcode 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I established a serious intrest in underground trance music around late 2000. Now nearly 4 years on ive been exploring the older more underground sound from pre '97. Wanting to know what the music sounded like when it all began back in '93, as you can imagine this cd, for me, was a must have. This cd in my opinion is one of the greatest trance sets i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Mixed by the legendary Paul van Dyk himself its a great uplifting journey through the early trance sounds from september 1993. Some of the tunes sound dated but if you look past all that they still remain effective & they are more than able to send a shiver down your spine. The cd features many cosmic baby tunes whomb is one of the pioneers of trance along with paul. The cd starts off with a great intro tune (skysoaring) which sets the mix of perfectly. The flow of the tunes are smooth & the mixing is pretty much spot on too. If your into the genre and want to explore where the music that we love today all came from then i recomend you take a serious look at this.
The Real Trance Sound May 10, 2003 Colmus Furios (Donegal, Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm in agreement with most of the reviews on this one. This mix compilation represents the burgeoning trance sound of 1993 onwards and maybe it might sound a bit strange to those who got into trance in 1999 a la Gatecrasher.Nothing wrong with that but this album is nonetheless a classic. As one of the original Paul van Dyk/Visions of Shiva fans i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who likes that sound.Quality atmospheric music features here, nicely blended by Paul van Dyk- showcasing the sound of Berlin's MFS label on this, the first of the X-Mix series. It does build slowly but ends on a high and is a good example of how to structure a mix album unlike some contemporary cds which are banging from start to finish or (more usually) dull and boring throughout and lacking any real melody. To summarise, buy this album if you like good trance in the spacey, euphoric style. If not,you don't know what you're missing!*French music lovers can also check out my review of this cd on Amazon.fr.
Back in the day trance........ June 29, 2001 souter23@aol.com (Nottingham) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The tunes in this decent mix-CD demonstrate what uplifting trance is all about. In comparison to the rather disposable cheesey formulaic "trance" of today, these tunes blended together by Mr. Van Dyk are brilliant. A lot of the tunes really do take you somewhere, and are far-reaching to say the least. If you are into this type of sound, also check out the early Rising High "Secret Life Of Trance" compilations.
Excellent snapshot of early trance from Germany October 28, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sorry Shane from Skynet but this is a great compilation in part because in came out in 1993. Comparing it to 2000 trance say a la Digweed/Sasha/Oakey/van Dyk/BT is a bit unfair. Many of these tracks have lasted well eg Love Stimulation is still played a lot and was recently re-released/remixed and/or re-appeared on lots of compilation albums. Fond memeories of this for me as it helped to ignite my interest in German trance music. 3 tracks - Humate - Love Stimulation followed by Cosmic Baby - Heaven's Tears then Visions of Shiva - how much can you take are 3 classics in a row. The album is best from track 6 onwards - it does start slowly but builds. Would recommend for anyone who knows they like trance and wants some history with a Teutonic flavour.
Bland and dated September 26, 2000 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have just bought this CD and my first impression is not good. I have bought a lot of music lately of a similar genre and this ranks the lowest of all. I am a big fan of Paul Van Dyk and I do like a few of the tracks on the CD but listening to it from start to finish leaves an impression of mostly boring, bland outdated sounds.
