Amazon.co.uk Review According to the Guinness Book of Records, Paul Oakenfold is the world's most successful DJ and few would argue--he is, after all, the man who almost single-handedly invented the concept of the superstar DJ. Despite this, and his producing bands such as the Happy Mondays and U2, Bunkka is his first real stab at solo superstardom. While it occasionally pushes the right buttons, it's far too blunt and schizophrenic to appeal to his traditional fan base. Abandoning the podium trance with which he made his name, Bunkka sees Oakenfold marrying Hybrid-like breakbeats with rock, hip-hop and progressive house--not to mention a healthy dose of pop. Add an impressive list of guest vocalists--Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson--and a slew of radio-friendly tunes, and it soon becomes clear that Oakey has gone straight for the populist jugular. Fair enough, you might say, but no amount of star turns, catchy choruses and occasional flashes of brilliance can hide the fact that Bunkka is fundamentally a very patchy album. --Matt Anniss

But this is alright, but, not doesnt really work any wonders, but the odd time or two, give it a listen and put it back in its case for another few months before you discover it again.

Excellent Driving Music July 13, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Driving up Topanga Canyon Boulevard one late evening in a borrowed sports car, playing Oakenfold's BUNKKA erased my fear of that intimidating, dark and winding road. As a matter of fact, the music blended so well with my--er--night cruising, I imagined myself being in some kind of mystery/thriller movie.Quite a thrill to see him at the Hollywood Bowl this past Sunday, 7 July! How should I describe it? Ah, yes, just like how that song goes: ... Once again, I find myself with a friend dancing the night away ... tonight's the night it goes sweatbox ... eclectic, electric ... drinking booze and mingling ... I danced all night to this DJ, this sugar danced all night to this DJ...
Good. But. And. April 9, 2003 Not quite up to the general standard of Paul Oakenfold's stuff (e.g. the absolutely effing brilliant "Tranceport") and no tracks of real import (like his brilliant remix of Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" - why isn't that on an album somewhere ?). However, it's all coherent and competent stuff - except one track."The harder they come" puts Oakenfold's instrumental skill in direct tension with the plaintive voice of Nelly Furtado, and Tricky, in a short piece that just WORKS. "Maybe love / is not for me / maybe lovers dream things / that I dont dream.", "The harder they come, the harder they fall. Maybe I would rather not go there at all.". Maybe it's the influence of Tricky, and his own particularly dark edge, but who cares - this track hits the spot. Hard. Nasty. Brilliant. Unlike the rest of the album, that only makes two of the above. Nuff Sed
