Good modern deck for young, aspiring DJ September 22, 2007 T. Clarke (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have previously used Technics SL series decks (MK2's and MK5's), and personally I feel this is a much more modern and efficient deck, for many reasons. Obviously, the features set it apart from others - it features the automatic 0% green light button, forwards AND reverse playback, 2 sets of ON /OFF buttons, and this in turn means a brilliant thing - it can be turned 90 degrees to save space, or for the battle position. What's more, this still retains, and boasts more quality than other decks on the market. The platter is nice and strong alluminum, with a metal finished top for the controls, rubberised feet for shock absorption, and nice chunky start stop buttons. Admittedly, it may not feature a 'complete' metal work out (the buttons and pitch are both plastic and metal made) but for the price, I'll sacrifice! The platter also have grooves which can be used for the faintest of touches when beat-matching. It's also quite a bit lighter than the Technics SL series, and 'very' handily features grooves under the base so you can easily move it about. When comparing the quality to the SL's however, you do notice a compromise. The base may not feel as sturdy, but I think what I miss from the SL's is the simpler platter. On this model, it has a groove on the edge, which I believe just creates more friction when cueing. The only thing this doesn't feature that the MK2/MK5 does is the pop up target light, which you have to buy separately. And performance? Well, before buying this, I did research and found upon going to the Numark web-page and other related ones, the torque power and other specs are all in the same range as the Technics! Remember, this is almost half the price.... .. and upon using it, I can honestly say their is little between them - if anything this Numark is more of a joy to use because of the superb slip-mat included, which is softer and slippier than a baby's bottom. The start/stop times are both excellent, and it all just feels great, especially with the smooth buttons. The direct drive motor operates is smooth, quiet, and good for rocking vinyls, though I still believe this SL's have a slighter better torque. This is mainly down to their unique 'magentic' motor, which is not featured on other decks - resulting in snappy performance. On these however and most others, you can still faintly here a rumble. But even the best products have slight downfalls. Luckily, this doesn't have to many. Firstly, as a note of guidance.. DON'T chuck away the Polystyrene packaging that hold the deck! Because on each side are a few of the included components (Allan Key, Headshell) which I personally found ridiculous, considering you wouldn't even know they were there! Apart from the packaging, the only other improvement I can see is the pitch fader. The Technics have very stiff (at first...) movement, but these are quite smooth and loose. Thats not so much of a problem, but I guess the stiffness and metal feel of the Technics feel alot more re-assuring. However, it only takes some getting used to. The other thing I found annoying was the placement of the buttons, right next to where you might lay your hand, and they can accidentally be pressed. And lastly, only as personal taste goes, the pitch isn't too stiff. This may be good for some, not for others, but apart from it being easy to knock, its super smooth. It's always hard reviewing something like a turntable, because what do you compare it with? The models above it, or below it? In this case, the Numark TT-200 sits around the top. In terms of value, this blows away all other direct drive decks of its 'price range', and of course the silly belt drive ones (who actually buys them these days?). And when looking above, it's catching up with the Technics SL series, but for a few minor imperfections. However, if you're a local DJ for a club, on the road, or at home, this is as close as you're going to get to the Technics without forking out hundreds. Some may say 'spend more now, then it'll last you', but is it really necessary to spend almost twice as much just for a few tweaks? I think not people. And just as a reminder, as with most other decks, this does not include the cartridge and stylus. However, you can buy both a GrooveTool and cartridge of ebay for a fantastic 7.50!
Probably the best thing to have been designed in America! (After seeing the American flag on the Numark needle packaging)
*Note - the RRP of these decks is 169, in case it says Currently Unavailable..*
