Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest   March 5, 2008
CMH (uk)
William Hootkins the greatest reader of what might be the greatest novel. Moby Dick undoubtedly has dull passages ( about whales mostly) but Hootkins makes even these good. So two masters of there different crafts combine to make entertainment and insights of the highest order.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant reading of THE book   March 14, 2006

Melville's 'Moby-Dick or The Whale' is the ultimate novel, which I shall however not discuss here - see the relevant reviews of the book (among which you may also find mine).
Naxos have very laudably published an audiobook version of the complete book, unabridged. That is quite a feat and involves 19 CDS and over 24 hours of listening, not that I would recommend listening to the whole novel at one stretch.
The text is admirably read by William Hootkins. His accent is American (as it should be), but not irritatingly so. He masters the text - the ambulatory style of Melville's story - brilliantly and emphasises the sentences well to further understanding. His voice is clear and the recording luckily loud enough to be able to listen to this on public transport or while walking through busy traffic.
I hugely enjoyed this read version - it made me smile time and again - and was a comfortable and fun way to re-live THE book (with the exception of the Bible).
