You couldn't be anymore wrong September 13, 2008 supersteve I have to disagree, this was one of the best Annual Albums I truely cared about.
At that time Trance was having it's golden period...until Mid-2004, when we saw the return of tried-and-tested rockbands with wired names that have been dug up from the 60's
And to follow it up, the return of Hardcore also made Trance dissapear, having this album will bring you a time when you would not stop listening to Trance 24/7
One of these days, Trance will return to the big leagues better than ever!
oh dear April 24, 2008 Rhys Lewis (S. Wales, UK) I have to say as an avid MoS follower, I find myself offended by The Annual 2003. I hate to agree with all the slating of this album but unfortunately it is completely justified as this is the most vapid and insipid collection of cheesy tripe I think I have ever come across. Who would have thought 2 years ago that MoS - The Annual would be a direct alternative to the Now! series!? Even a collector of The Annual series would be highly advised to miss out on this. I would not go to the bottom of my garden to listen to some of the songs on this album. All in all an immense dissapointment and I couln't even recommend it to somebody I don't really like.
Treat it now as memories, not a true MoS album January 4, 2006 T. Clarke (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Strange as it may sound, I agree with both the negative and positive comments on this album. While this is far from the truth of what happens musically at one of the UK's most famous, I can still reflect on it with memories of when I was younger teen, and when I wasn't too bothered about commericiality, or mixing in albums. Admittedly, time moves on, and now I've grown up, I've learnt to appreciate some of the earliest MoS Annuals, from vol.1, to vol.4, when they were based around the club, and compiled/mixed by quality DJ's. Steve Canueto, however, should not have been given this oppurtunity to put together this album. Former mastering/producer of the older albums, he'll never win any awards for his computer mixing here. Though 'The Annual' should represent what it says, an 'annual' of music through the year, this album seems a bit muddled. Cd1 has the latest "chart toppers" (the major problem) while Cd2, which is average, has a mix of, what was then, the latest house tunes, gradually mixing into some pathetic 80's remixes. With this 80's revival theme in mind, the least said about Cd3, the better... Big selling 'Heaven' starts cd1, which was a big song at the time, though it wore of quick. I shudnt need to mention the amount of poor artists included - Scooter? I need say no more - a german character who shouts out mindless rubbish into a microphone with a chipmink in the background must make Pete Tong and Boy George laugh out loud. Flip and Fill take their place here too (they seemed to specialise in commerical dance during this era, with many other artists), leaving Alex Gold to be the only real desecent artist on the cd. His song Foreign Shore is actually goos, but more of it is needed. Can You Feel was a welcome hearing too, and my most played song on the cd (of the very select bunch of songs). Out of all the cds though, this is the best mixed, though the sounds of euro-synths and cheesey lines are still present throughout. Cd2 is probably the least commercial, though I need not mention the amount of over-played tunes present at the start. Las Ketchup? I shudnt have to say what this sounds like, the other reviewers made sure of that... My Vision is probably one of the better songs, and I still like it, but you'll see what a dodgey selection this cd has when you come to 'Billy Jean'... hmmm Then finally, cd3. The best till last? Hardly. Unless you mean that in a sarcastic way, because in that case, it really is. I would have mistaken this for an 80's revival if it wernt for the horrible euro-synths that wrecked some classics, and the mixing at times is awful. Real crackers (dont worry, I dont mean that in a postive way!) include Culture Flash (immediate skip) with its horrible cheesey synths, and Careless Whisper.. oh yeah, and Loud and Proud. I think even the name of that song put me of it right away... Lets Get It Right seems to be the only worthy song, its just a shame its at the end, though its mellow rhythm sums up a confused time for MoS. Or, where they really confused??.. ..or did they just cash in on the teens? If they did, I certainly bought trap, but I have no regrets, I was young. Its just a shame now looking back, and seeing how they cashed in on such a commercial era, from changing the year (2003, not 2002, so that it has a longer shelf life) of the album, to doing mixing on the cheap, and slapping in the years top of the pops hits with some real euro trash (i'm sorry to say it is the truth, I don't want to sound to harsh!). Yet, this may suprise you, I still like it. Not all of it, admittedly. But this is an album which I can reflect on my childhood, and when I was indeed younger, from first hearing the songs in a bowling alley, to crushes on girls - just a general young teen life! The only way to appreciate the album in this sense, is by not actually analzing it down to the bone, as you would by saying The Annual vol.2 is an absolute stunning album, and the best selling complimation album ever (Guniness Book of Records fact!). I just treat ot as what it is right now, and thats a chance to look back. The album does have a mellow feel, thats obvious, but I guess that sums up the weather of the winter when it was released (rain rain rain!) and that was genrally just the theme of 2002. With these mellow, yet lovely rhythms of Can You Feel, Lets Get It Right, Moonlight Shadow, My Vision, and a selection of other tracks, its easy to see why this is a good album. But this is my opinion - the songs reflect my era of when I was younger, so older listeners won't appreciate it - I respect that. If you want a club annual of 2002, get Godskitchen from that year (Life was excellent) but if your looking back and want an album to reflect you teen years of bubble gum and fun, this doesnt dissapoint.
dear santa, i'd rather have no presents than have this. December 5, 2003 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Oh dear, to the person that said this was the best annuals they had, oh dear. Do you not have volumes 1 and 2? 2000 was pushing the cheese but still had some fine tracks on. This cd merely continues "mos" decline in compilation. "mos" because they have very little to do with the club. Perhaps "mos" should try and make cds that reflect MoS the club rather than the local townie disco. I don't think that anyone interested in dance music will buy this cd, this cd is for the kids who want something with a posher name than the yearly NOW! compilation for xmas. For this is all this is a NOW! alternative. This is not a dance compilation, FACT!!!
Pleased November 9, 2003 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I understand what most of the reviewers who are scoring this compilation at 1 or 2/5 are saying but I have to disagree with them. I bought this compilation when it first came out and was extremely pleased with it. Its mixture of uplifting trance and funky house got me through the winter months with a smile on my face. It is true that this album is commercial, about that there is no doubt. In terms of uplifting trance, however, The Annual 2003 is every bit as good as any other decent trance compilation. If people are getting fed up with the increasing commerciality of Ministry of Sound's albums then they should stop complaining and start buying Gatecrasher or Godskitchen. As it stands, The Annual 2003 is a great compilation with a diverse mixture of uplifting trance on CD's 1 and 3, and a delightful selection of funky house on CD2. It's best listened to when in a melancholy mood, loud and through headphones. Just sit back and let the tunes do away with your mind!! Well worth buying!
