Have to say this netbook did everything it was labeled to do. Opened the box, plugged in and all working perfectly in 5 minutes flat... and a fast PC!
Even started to use plugged into an external keyboard, mouse, and screen as a Linux web development machine. Faster and easier than my 3,500 conventional monster PC.
What an extremely useful and productive device August 14, 2008 N. Aurelius-haddock (London) 60 out of 60 found this review helpful
I took delivery of this little unit yesterday, and have been impressed by it's performance and new applications.
Asus have added an auto 3G detection utility, which worked perfectly with the T-mobile USB stick I tested it with. They have modified the office suite to Sun's Star office from Open Office, and included a dictionary application amongst other new applications.
The new Intel Atom processor is faster than the previous under-clocked Celerons in the earlier versions, and all the applications are faster. I also like the bigger screen which allows full page web browsing, and the font size is easily modified. The screen appears bright and clear, and is also an improvement over the previous 701.
The new keys at the top of the keyboard offer instant suspend and modifying the level of performance you want, speed for applications or extra battery longevity. You can also launch Skype with a single key press. I managed 5.5 hrs of battery life while using the wi-fi adapter but dimming the screen slightly. The keyboard is also a massive improvement on the 701, and typing a document with it will be a breeze.
This is an ideal machine for someone looking for a very simple interface but a reasonably powerful machine. It offers easy access to the Internet with Firefox, a good wordprocessing facility, good music management, good photo management etc. There is also plenty of storage available with the 40GB solid state disk. I'm glad I purchased the SSD version over the hard disk version, as the hard disk will reduce battery life considerably.
If you are looking for a netbook/mini laptop I would definitely put this on the short list.
