Want the latest Laptop? Here's how to get it for a fiver December 2, 2008 Alice Smith Christmas is coming so save your cash! Why purchase something you can get for a fiver.
Go to YourLaptop.co.cc and sign up. Complete ONE offer - I would recommend Gala Bingo (you know, the one Sharon Osborne advertises for on tv),as this is cheap and fun (and you might win some money in the process!)
If you really don't want to spend, there is a free Lovefilm trial.
All companies are well known so there is no risk involved- give it a go! I got my Laptop and many other things this way, so don't miss out.
I was a sceptic once but now I am SO glad I gave it a chance. B8C approved this system on their Newsnight programme a while back.
Many items to choose from and they send your gift Free of charge.
A excellent little machine November 11, 2008 Moneyslane (N Ireland) Very impressed with this netbook. Linux and the solid state drive makes it very fast. None of the usual going away to make your dinner while Vista boots stuff. Also unlike Vista this connects to the internet first try every time, in airports, in hotels, as well as at home. OpenOffice more than meets all my needs, very easy to use. Highly recommended
compact, sleek and rather lovely November 11, 2008 Colin Reilly (Alba) great little netbook. i've stuck xubuntu (more info on this can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L ) on it but the default linpus install should keep most people happy. i'm only get around 2 hours on the battery...not the suggested 3. otherwise no complaints.
An old codger's viewpoint November 10, 2008 codger (Doncaster UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Old codger, (79) My computer needs were portability, wireless, simplicity and Linnus. Oh and I don't like monopolyistic Microsoft anyway. Delivery was excellent. Had my Acer set up and working perfectly within an hour (It took just one phone call to my service provider to tell me how to conect wirelessly to the modem - no wires or dongles now!) In another hour (from my old antique desktop system,) I downloaded my files, my music and my pictures by means of a memory stick. Everything worked including text compatability. Screen is small for old eyes but hey, you can always increase the size of the text. I also liked the ability to brighten the screen at will. Keyboard? Seems full size to me. I use a mouse (never did like touchpads-particularly this one.) I bought an 8gb card but haven't needed it yet. I also paid to download the full version of the provided May Jhong - worth it to me. Now I can read 'Daily Mail on line' in bed. Verdict- A brilliant piece of kit.
Amazing power and weight for the price! November 6, 2008 M. CLARKE (Worcestershire, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought one of these from a red-and-blue supermarket chain, only because I didnt have to wait for delivery; the price was exactly the same! Out of the box, it runs pretty smoothly. Im used to using UNIX at work, but found this version of LINUX a bit restrictive, to be honest. There are a few tweaks out there to unlock the GUI (www.aspireoneuser.com) to give you the oppurtunity to install your own packages.
BUT WAIT: I have since installed Windows XP onto mine! Yes, it can be done via USB (with a little tweaking, google "Install XP via USB" and a youtube video of XP being installed on an aspire one) or via a USB DVD-ROM. Performace in XP is just as good as Linux, after a bit of playing. The main drawback is the write speed of the internal SSD. I think its about 3MB/sec !! Compare that to a standard HD (min 20MB/sec!). You really feel this as XP uses a swapfile. But if you disable this, then the system flies. Ive even removed the XP "fisher price" looks to get even better performance.
Windows boots up in about 15 seconds from cold. Or use hibernation for a 5 second boot.
You can also install a utility to improve the fan noise (yes the fan does whine a bit in Linux and XP). But this new tool turns it off until the CPU temp gets to around 65 degress. Since then no lock ups. No slow downs. No fan noise!!! A totally silent, Windows XP netbook!
Highly recommend at this price, even if you use Linux. But be aware that you can install XP!
