4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect   November 30, 2008
Alf (N Ireland)
I bought a 120 Gb 512 RAM AA1 on the 12th November for 199 (free delivery) and couldn't wait until Christmas.
Its almost perfect apart from two minor problems.

1. The fan is a bit noisy, however the aspireoneuser forum say a bios upgrade helps.
2. The file manager (Thunar) cannot recognize my windows home network. Its strange as Acer are aware of this problem and as yet haven't release an upgrade to fix the problem.

Apart from these minor problems I would recommend the AA1 to anyone wanting a netbook.

Update on imperfections -

Install Konqueror by opening a terminal window and enter "sudo yum install kdebase"
After it downloads, open your file manager and go to /usr/share/applications/kde and you should see several Konqueror desktop configuration files.
Right click the largest desktop configuration file and send it to the desktop
Use file manager to go to desktop and click the shortcut
From there it is fairly simple to access a windows network, share files and printers.

4.5 stars now. Just the noisy fan to fix.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the manual?   November 27, 2008

Amazon promote a 1GB memory upgrade with this machine, but when you go to find the "AcerSystem User Guide" which page 7 of the "Quick Guide" claims to be installed on the hard drive, it is nowhere to be found! So, no instructions from Acer (or Amazon, come to that) re. how to go about the memory upgrade. There turns out to be MUCH more disassembly required that I have ever encountered in other computers, for such a routing upgrade. Fortunately, video guides to what you have to do, one of which is really excellent, can be found by searching You Tube for "Acer Aspire One memory upgrade" (without the quote marks).

I have not yet tried the WiFi option, but must say getting online via my Virgin Media cable modem was unbelievably straightforward. It just got on with it and I was online before I knew it.

3 out of 5 stars MY Acer one 150 AW   September 14, 2008

Hi

I purchased this nice looking number yesterday to replace my Eee PC 4 gig machine, which is in the same bracket as this Acer 150AW (512mb) machine but with the added benefit of having a 120 Gig hard drive, with both also using Linux as an operating system. I must stress it was not purchase from Amazon, but another major high street chain (Cxxxys)and felt complelled to write this report/ review.

I agree with the others that it was easy to set-up both the wireless internet connection, and network printers. But it went down hill from there!
I loaded a version from the Skype web page, have about 7 different one to choose from which is from what I see is also dependent on the version of Linux , and based on a trial and error eventually load and installed the program. However only being able to drop it into the desk top file after extracting it (what the hell all that is about), which is a pain as you have to go hunting for it every time you wish to use it, and like the other person said I am also unable to place it in either the toolbar, or on the main front home page screen. I tried and down loaded all updates hoping this would cure any other issues but it was no good?

The other main issue I have come across is that I am unable to access my wireless network computers or my network hard drive (It must be working as I am able to load and install my network printers), which makes it a real chore to access files. It seems only files that are on a memory stick or down loaded from the net, or created on this laptop can be stored and accessed. I never had any of these issues with my Asus Eee PC which also uses Linux, and to be frank it's a far easier platform and set-up than the Acer but only having 4 gigs of memory making it restricted.

With my Eee PC I can do everything the Acer can do and more, the down side to the Eee PC is battery life and the screen resolution. The up side only really for the Acer against the Eee PC is the better screen size and resolution, and from what others say is the battery life

To sum this up Acer have a long way to go over the Asus with the software issues, and it I had to do this again I would have gone that extra mile and purchased another Asus but with a hard drive.
The Acer runs smoothly and quite cool; the speaker out put is not of that of the Asus but scores with a better screen.

If anybody can answer the above issues, i.e., network, Skype / software short cuts please come back and reply to this?

I am a little disappointed with this purchase as it seem Acer have just rushed this out to keep up with its competitors.

Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Little Diamond   September 9, 2008

This little diamond is excellent the most noticable thing is the speed and the clarity of the LCD screen. The Operating System is Linux Lite and boots from cold in less than 15 seconds. Connected to my WiFi in another 3 seconds and I was up and running. From sleep it takes about 5 seconds to boot. Just close the lid and it sleeps open the lid again and tap any key at it is up and running from where you left it. Battery time is about 2-3 hours and the keyboard is big enough for proper typing.

Ports:-
> 3 USB2 ports is good and loaded my USB mouse in seconds.
> There are headphone jacks on the side which loaded first time.
> There are 2 card readers 1. SD only and the other a multi card reader.
> Network Slot which connected to my network without any configuring,
> VGA Monitor output for a monitor.

Software:-
Comes loaded with OpenOffice alowing you to use or create most M$ documents, Videos, Music etc... It has a built in Webcam and Microphone for those addicts of instant messaging MSN, AOL, Yahoo, GoogleTalk etc.....

The best thing is that user don't have any administrator access so the operating system can never get trashed, unlike M$. The drawback is you can't add new programs but that is the point with this little machine. It is Small, Light and fast.

A 120GB hard drive means you can store more files than you should and the size makes it ideal for travel or for the bedroom dresser.

Highly recommend to anyone but especially for children or computer shy as it is so simple and easy to use.
