I wanted a new laptop for my daughter, she didn't want anything that was slow, but didn't need top of the range, as she only uses it for talking to friends, emails and homework & playing a few games.
But this was a lot better than her previous one. It was faster and more up to date too.
This is classed as Mid-Range in laptops and the specs for the money is really good.
2Gb of working space,
built-in webcam and microphone.
Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2.10GHz) processor.
1Gb + 1Gb DDR2 RAM. 160Gb SATA hard drive.
17ins wide XGA +200 CSV display.
DVD supermulti dual layer drive.
Intel GM45 graphics.
WiFi 802.11 a/g/h.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

I was looking for a desktop replacement with a good spec and a 17 inch display for under 400, this machine certainly ticks all the boxes. The setup was long winded and the display keeps going off making you wonder if its still working. No rescue disks of any description, Toshiba expects you to make your own. Not a good prospect for any novice PC owner, Dell give a much more user friendly experience.
If your new to PCs the AMD Athlon is the quicker cheaper version of the Intel Pentium (the processor I prefer as an experienced user).
So far we are pleased with the machine itself but found out later that the supplied Microsoft Office is a demo which lasts a few weeks before your have to pay for it. So we downloaded Open Office (127MB so broadband required) which is free and is compatible with Microsoft Office. If your used to PCs this is a very good machine, if your a novice then maybe your'll need help creating those backup disks.
The 2GB of memmory is the minimum for running vista (even though Microsoft do state 1GB) and the 120GB hard-drive is enough as long as your not into photo's or store large files. Even plays movies straight out of the box, which is unusual because the required decoders aren't always included with PCs.
Connectivity is sparse really with only the minimum connectors there such as 3 USB ports and the normal 15 pin HD for external monitors.
As the LCD is 17 inch this means that the keyboard is much bigger so all I needed to add was a wireless mouse to make it more useable.
So generally the family has been happy with this Laptop.
