Far more impressed than expected November 20, 2008 Seren Ade (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently bought one of these early version Asus netbooks in an attempt to evaluate how useful they would be:
i) at all ii) for use by workplace-based students iii) for use by people are not particularly computer literate iv) for use by children v) for use as an ultraportable subsidary machine by people who are already using either pcs or apple computers
Despite a cynical attitude to the machine, I have been very impressed. There is little/no waiting around for an hourglass with this machine when it comes to OS loadup. The machine comes with an OpenOffice installation that is compatible with software in Office 2003 and the drivers for almost all printers I have tried adding have been recognised, without need to recourse to downloads or installation discs.
Having worked in some fairly structured network environments, my suspicion is that this is an adequate enough machine if you are working solo and without closely set parameters... but not so great if you are trying to attach to a cluster as a matter of urgency e.g. for last minute printing.
In terms of ease of use... in an experiment, I literally handed my eee701 over to a group of 4-11yr old children attending an after school club. The preinstalled games were simply too difficult for the youngest players, but 6+ year olds could cope with many applications and games without difficulty. This is a VERY easy machine to learn, and several children impressed their parents with what they could do.
With the exception of a Mac Classic, when I was very little, I have been a Windows PC user all my life. The eee 701 isn't perfect, but a similar machine with a larger monitor, a slightly bigger keyboard and a bigger flash drive and/or more USB ports could well convince me to move away from Windows-based systems permanently.
