Good, but slightly disappointing April 16, 2008 Reaction (UK) When I saw that Lange had released a CD of his work I was very excited. I'd noticed that over the years much of the trance stuff that has made me really stop and listen has been mixed by Lange. That's why I found myself on his website and discovering this album...
The album is an interesting listen, if only to hear how he's progressed. On the second CD (his remix work), I was expecting non-stop uplifting trance magic, and to discover some brilliant tracks I might have missed. But it falls a bit short. Yes there is some great stuff here, but many tracks seem to be too long, with about 1 minute of greatness in the middle. I'd have preferred more, shorter, mixes. It's all pretty good, but doesn't classify as the stuff for which you'd bolt the door, turn out the lights, and turn up the volume.
It was the first CD that surprised me though - Lange's own stuff, which I'd never heard. The track 'Frozen Beach' brought a tear to my eye: moving, screaming, crying synths. Perfect. Then there's 'Late Night Self Indulgence', which is pure Tangerine Dream pre-1990, with lovely chord changes. Those really are the highlights, and prove what Lange should really be doing - composing not remixing!
really good trance album/package April 15, 2008 Mr. S. J. Spooner (Middlesbrough) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i have to say, after being a trance fan for about 10 years now and after owning a number of albums, this is very good! as far as the disc containing his new/recent material it is all very well produced and very listenable to. there are no real weak tunes and nothing offensive on the ear. 3 of the 11 tracks are vocals, and about 4 are actually more like chill out trance, with no beat, and with a floaty atmospheric feel. overall on cd one, i really like about 7 of the 11 tunes. but really its the value for money that is great about buying this album, because cd has loads of great old tunes, in full/un-mixed form that lange has either made himself or been involved with in the form of remixes. its just a great cd of some tunes i love and some of the less obvious "classics" i dont own! definately worth a but. well done lange!
Great to finally get Lange's album- but it's a bit dated March 12, 2008 Mr. Stuart Bruce (Bristol, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Better Late Than Never" is an apt title for Lange's first artist album, released in 2008 after his most famous remixes and singles were released and 1998-2000, so some of us have been waiting a long time for this album...
It's a decent trance album, it ticks all the right boxes. It starts off beautifully with "Nearly Home" and "Songless" which are lovely rich productions, but some of the later tracks get a little bit flat and forgettable. It's not a classic and personally I would've preferred a couple more vocal tracks. Quality-wise it's pretty much equal to a Paul Van Dyk album, in fact it has a lot in common with earlier more instrumental PvD albums.
Some of the tracks sound a bit dated, especially "Dial Me Up" with its heavy use of the sound of a pre-broadband modem, that makes me suspect that some of these tracks were written several years ago.
Disc 2, labelled 'History', is a good bonus though, some of the best remixes of and by Lange. Again most of them are a good few years old now so they really are History but it's good to hear them again and all in one place.
