Deceptive Digweed August 4, 2008 Merlin Beard (London) JD was leaving me behind. On many of his compilations before this, he had headed down a dark and murky path and I was losing my willingness to follow him. Then he takes a change of direction and all is well again. Fabric 20 is seriously dirty and funky and a million miles away from his GU compliations. This has a cheekiness about it.... we all know JD is a formidable DJ, so it's good to hear him easing off and lightening up. I'm a firm believer that DJs should play what they like and not be pigeon-holed. Some of Diggers early house mixes were brilliant, as were some of the progressive ones..... then he became miserable? Seems he's cheered up again though....
Goldtrix - Vertigo. What an ending!!
mixed bag... September 30, 2006 cmdrdeathguts (Plymouth uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Until this CD, Digweed was known mostly as a progressive house DJ - but then, a whole 3 years had passed since his last CD, so a change in sound was more or less expected. And that change has brought him into the current tech-house love-in, with varying success.
This mix is at its best when it sticks to the techno-ey side of things. Adam Johnson's "Traber" and the subsequent "Forgive and Forget" suggest this as the main direction of the mix, but there are unwelcome detours abound into rather uninspiring electro-house tunes (the present mix of "Lie To Me", Martin freakin' Solveig, and most of all "Knob Job") which detract from the overall punch. "In The Dark" and "Better World" are well placed to keep interest going, and closing track "Vertigo" is fab too, the only prog cut on the disc. and a very good one for it.
It's difficult to recommend this wholeheartedly, but it's by no means terrible. and some people like cliched basslines and dumb-sounding drum machines, so... His more recent "Transitions" mix on renaissance explores this whole angle a lot more successfully, so pick that one up before this.
A Change of Direction for Digweed June 4, 2006 R. Mullaney (Leeds, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Fabric 20 starts off with a typical John Digweed ethereal sounding track and quickly mutates into a rather untypical mix of jackin' house and techno. Those of you expecting JD's trademark ambient breakbeats and progressive house may be initially put off by the tracklisting but I would tell these people to give this CD a chance because this is one hell of a mix.
Digweed shows he still has a good ear for the dancefloor and almost every track on here is a funky little treat. The mix builds from the fairly low key 'Strive to Live' by Pete Moss through 'Traber' by Adam Johnson into the wonderful Richard Davis remix of 'Forgive & Forget'. Things pick up from here with one of the best tracks of the compliation, 'True Science' by RaSoul. The set builds into more uptempo tech house and bizzarrely even takes in a dub mix of Martin Solviegs 'Rocking Music' which works very nicely despite usually been more at home on a Hed Kandi CD. The mix then develops into techno with Slam, Angel Alanis, Infusion and the brilliant Superpitcher track 'Happiness' remixed by Kompakt boss Michael Mayer. The mix ends on this note with tracks by Joel Mull and Matrix.
The mixing is excellent, almost clinical and it sounds like it may have even been done on Ableton Live. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as I am all for using new technology and its not like Digweed hasn't proven his abilities on the decks. After all, his Bedrock, Renaissance and Northern Exposure mixes are regarded as some of the best DJ mixes of all time.
A real change of direction for Digweed but not an unwelcome one.
Surprising, but teriffic. January 27, 2006 Mitya (Nottm., UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I ordered this CD as a matter of course. It was JD, and it was Fabric. What is there to think about? Then I received it, looked at the tracklisting and felt a little edgy. How many prospective buyers are reading these reviews thinking "I don't buy John Digweed to hear Martin Solveig"? And you'd be right to be slightly mystified. This CD, as many have pointed out, isn't about JD's trademark dark, unhurried progressive sound, it's about carrying beats and soulful house, and boy does he pull it off.If it was ever risky for a strictly pigeon-holde pioneer like Digweed to branch out, he's vindicated with this mix. From start to finish the tracks are quality and the mixing likewise. A gentle, prodding intro in the form of Pete Moss's Strive to Live gives way to the mainstay rhythms which dominate this offering. Tracks 4-6 in particular are very strong, with Billy Dalessandro's In the Dark at track 6 the highlights, its infectious beats and incessant motion a real pick of the CD. Superpitcher's Happiness brings things back down later on to a controlled, even dark level, which proves the precursor to a flowing, ambient ending. The musical prose one can use in these reviews is fine, but at the end of the day this is a superb mix by a superb DJ. If you're used to Digweed and feel somewhat confused by his tracklisting, trust the man and buy it.

Once again Digweed comes up with a stormer of a mix CD - like someone said its chock full of quality twisted house music. Kind of like an updated version of his Bedrock CD1, maybe even slightly better.Check out his Choice mix on azuri too if you're after something else to get the party going!
