Diggers at his finest June 23, 2008 Merlin Beard (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Brilliant! - You know why? Because this simply involves two decks, a mixer (I'm guessing the DJM600 if the much used filter effect on this CD is anything to go by) and a very talented DJ. I love this mix in its glorious entirety. What's more - it's live. On a good stereo, you can actually here the occasional record crackle! The mixing is by and large first rate - beat perfect, lengthy and in key and the programming is at times, inspired!! I still listen to this compliation an awful lot today and still play out some of the tunes on it myself - especially Schudelfloss, Twist & Shout, Same Sun Same Sky and Bullet, because they still sound so fresh & funky....
An emotional journey - Digweeds best work April 24, 2007 T. Clarke (UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
With previous reviews already rating this as the best mix collection ever, I need not repeat this statement... but I just can't help myself! Almost 12 years on, and this is still up their as the best - bar none!
The presentation of the album is top notch, contrasting the original Mix Collection with a more contemporary look - silver (or Gold, if you got the other edition) outer slip case, and a chunky package where all the discs fold out separately from the centre. On the back, you then realise that once everything is un-folded, it makes a 'Jesus Cross', with a figure stretching the length of the card... Inspired! Their is also a beautiful little booklet.
Disc 1 is the most progressive mix on the album, starting off with the mysterious 'Another Love' which sends hairs raising when the beat matches into the amazing 'Change' by Daphne, which has all the elements of a classic dance track - great lyrics, memorable rhythm! For Digweed on this mix, the use of vocals; Black Womans vocals in particular, is used to great and very balance effect. Other stand out tunes include the likes of 'So In Love', 'Want Me Love Me', 'Into The Blue' and the beautiful 'Tangled In My Thoughts' - its powerful vocals making a great ending to the disc.
Disc 2 stands out as being the most emotional mix of the album, beginning with a stonking 11 minute mix of 'A Prayer To The Music'. 'Anomaly' follows the first track, a widely played track across clubs at the time, and probably one of the best transitions you'll hear starts with 'Bullet' mixing into 'Indoctrinate' - half way through the track starts a fantastic 3 minute blend of 2 songs that go so well with each other. 'Shuderlfloss' is likely to be the highlight of the disc, and sum how just sits beautifully, being the song in the centre of the albums track list.
But if its pure trance you want, Disc 3 will be the highlight of the album. I'm not going to name all the tracks that I love, because I'd be here forever, but 'Hand In Hand' is undoubtedly one of the best dance songs your likely to hear. 'Children' by Robert Miles is here, and although the track listing calls it a remix, its not - its just the original thats extended in the middle-bridge. 'No Other Love' leads up to Children with an emotional 12 minute ride of what is a powerful, fast, and "get up and dance" CD.
So, how does it compare with The Mix Collection 1? To me, their is nothing between them. That's a bold decision to make, but its simply the truth. The reason why they are both the best is pretty simple - they both capture significant moments in time during the 90's. While the first mix collection is bouncy, and has shorter, more rhythm and vocal based tracks, this collection Part 2 is more progressive, and is alot, lot more mature. By that, I mean Digweed had the confidence to create more variety in the mixing, from cuts, to long hair raising beat matches. But one thing is for sure... both put you in euphoria. It's fair to say Part 2 taps into your emotions alot more than the first album.
Theirs little else to say. This is an album where you'll hear every vinyl crackle - its totally authentic and mixed by a world class DJ who's dedication and love of music had payed off after becoming a mobile gardener to pay for records! If you want the best, this is it. This is the 90's in a silver (or Gold, if you get lucky!) slipcase...
10 years old and as fresh as ever February 27, 2007 blackmightcrash 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just wanted to say it too, one of the best mix collections ever. Seminal.
Renaissance 2 - the best has never been bettered. October 3, 2006 A. J. Tricklebank (Shrewsbury, Shropshire, United Kingdom) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Without a doubt one of the greatest mixes of the 90s, if not THE best. The original Renaissance set the bar to the roof but somehow Sasha and Digweed pulled out the stops to produce this masterpiece. I've been listening to both for over 10 years and can honestly say I'll be listening to them both for at least another 10! Simply superb in every way...
The best September 5, 2006 superdudeo (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been listening to this album for 10 years now and I keep going back to it. It's the best collection of house/trance mix that has never been bettered. Amazing.
