Yoshitoshi stars shine under the watchful eye of Deep Dish October 2, 2003 Simon J. Whight (Manchester) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the third in the series of the In House We Trust Series (the first being done a LONG time ago by Yoshitoshi label owners Deep Dish for the now defunct Tribal label, the second being mixed by Behrouz and MV) and up step Luke Fair and Desyn Masiello to the turntables to provide a summary of the Yoshitoshi and Shinichi sound to date. Fans of Deep Dish will immediately be right at home here with a classic Deep Dish production present, plus a few key choices that have appeared on Dish compilations in the past. You may not know the DJs but they are a respected part of the Yoshitoshi family, and Deep Dish followers love them almost as much as they love the main guys themselves. Luke Fair kicks off his CD with some swirling ambience and dark moods before shifting to a lighter melodic house vein via Deep Dish's A Glass Of Chianti and Loudeast's Sondo Profundo. A Miguel Migs selection and one of his own productions under his Luke Wan guise. The mix rounds off in a techy fashion with Christian Smith and Rob Rives making an appearance and Sultan's Night Visions (as seen on Global Underground Toronto) closes the mix with blissed out and chilled synths and vocals. The mixing is all very smooth and you get a nice variety of sounds for your money. Thats not it though, Desyn steps up for disc 2. From the Yoshi message board, everyone was anticipating Luke's mix the most, but Desyn steals the show. Mining deeper into the Yoshitoshi past, he digs up Deep Dish's DC Depressed project, Flim Flam's Yellow Sox, Chiapet's Tick Tock, David Alvarado's Passion Fruit and mixes them up a storm alongside recent cuts from PQM, Chap and Loudeast. All this is mixed in style too, listen to how an accapella of Yoshi classic Luzon's The Bagio Track is layered over the top of Loudeast's Lights Off, just adding that extra dimention. Both mixes are fantastic, Desyn's slightly more sparky mixing style wins it for me. Make no mistake, this is a quality package and essential for fans of electronic house and Deep Dish.
