Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I first started selling Hi-Fi, the recipe for designing a good pair of speakers was quite simple - stick a couple of big drivers in a big box, shove some foam on the front, say a few prayers, and you'd got yourself a major sales success. Then everything changed - people stopped using Jimmy Hendrix as a measuring tool and started using a new fangled thing called 'SCIENCE' instead. As a result, speakers generally got a lot better and also a lot smaller too. No one seemed interested in applying all this new technology to a mid-sized speaker, which is a shame because if they had, they would have ended up with something that completely blew away even the best small units. And that in a nutshell is exactly what Tannoy have just done with their excellent F1 custom system. People have got so used to hearing good small speakers, that they have forgotten how much better a proper mid-sized speaker can be. These speakers are still only 12 inches tall, i.e. not much bigger than the popular 'pretty-pretty' micro sat-sub systems, - but they sound an awful lot better.
