5 out of 5 stars Excellent Media Player   December 17, 2008

After doing lots of research I finally opted for the D-Link 330, a bargain at 99 on Amazon and being a bit of a self-proclaimed 'techie' was very impressed with the kit upon opening the box.

Setting this up was very simple, using the quickstart guide I got this up and running in under 5 minutes. Even over my relatively weak wireless G network (I'm running a Netgear DG834GT router) video & sound quality is exceptional. Furthermore I was very impressed with the fact that D-Link supply all the relevant cables including HD, these alone can be around 10 from most outlets.

Initially, I had installed the 'Divx Connected' server software on my very old HP desktop - a very modest Pentium 4, with 512Mb Ram and on-board graphics (a very weak 8Mb Intel on-board AGP chipset) - while it worked fine I did notice some slowdown when going through the menus and generally slightly jagged fonts.

I soon found out this was because the graphics card in my PC doesn't support OpenGL (or in simple terms is very old and struggles with everything except basic applications) - however this was to be expected as my 'Business PC' wasn't designed for intensive tasks such as games, video editing.

To improve the performance, I then installed the same server software software to my laptop (dual-core, 2Gb Ram, Radeon HD2400 Graphics) - this transformation made the menus fly at amazing speed! Not only that, the menus itself looks crisper especially the text which is now anti-aliased due to the much improved graphics chipset in my laptop.

The Divx community provide many extras such as skins and plugins, the latter being probably the most impressive feature on the device. Already I have installed tons of plugins that enhance what I can do on my media center - my favourites include youtube and the wonderful last.fm application - this allows you to access a huge library of music online. It is much like your own personalised radio station, should you have any web programming knowledge you can even alter these or make your own plugins and skins to contribute to the Divx community.

If anyone wishes to try this out before you buy, you can even install the PC Client software and actually see how it look on your TV! Its great - mind you the text may look abit 'jagged' and 'rough' when using the PC Client - TRUST ME - it is 100% fine when you view it back on your TV.

I really can't fault this device - its a great bit of kit and well worth the money. If your like me and do have a lot of downloaded divx content (all legally of course!) then this is probably perfect for you.

If I really had to moan about something, it would be that it only outputs to 720P (not 1080P like the PS3) but this is serious nit-picking. I promise I don't work for D-Link or anything, but I'll certainly buy more of their products in the future - this is a great bit of hardware, just buy it you'll be thanking me soon enough!

4 out of 5 stars Software first   November 8, 2008

This device does everything it says on the box, but is best used after a bit of planning to get the best results. I have two of these devices linked over a Devolo mains home networking system (up to 200 mbits). I'm not too interested in the music side as it doesn't support FLAC and I use a Squeezebox system for this.
I run the Divx Connected software from my Quad Core Mesh PC so it runs quickly. However as I have found for a few years now converting files into Divx format (software supplied) can cause some problems.
First of all the Divx files are ever so slightly jerky when played through the DSM-330 - not enough to spoil enjoyment but enough to put you on edge after 3 hours of Ben Hur. This is not a network issue or a PC issue because I've tried it elsewhere - I think that the problem could be with the 330 as Divx requires more decompression than most codecs and the internal processor may not be quite up to it.
Secondly AV sync issues - about 1 in 3 of my Divx movies suffers from this after about an hour and it gets progressively worse. This is not a player issue but a Divx issue. I've tried reconverting them and running them on the Divx player on my PC but they still go at the same place. I think it must be when they move from one .vob file to the next in the conversion process. The 330 player can compensate for this as you can adjust the sync as it moves through the movie but this cam spoil enjoyment as you have to use it several times.
The best solution for this player is to buy a good VOB converter such as the AVS Video Converter (avoid the cheaper ones available online) and use the default settings to convert it to AVI (it uses Xvid I think). This gives file sizes that are about 20% larger than Divx but it solves both the AV sync issues and the slight jerkiness vanishes giving a very smooth playback (and storage is cheap these days - you can get 400+ movies on a 1 Tb drive)
I've never tried the 330 via Wireless but would think you need a reliable high speed connection to get the best results. Invest 90 in a Devolo 200 system to ensure it works to its full potential.

2 out of 5 stars Really frustrated   October 30, 2008

Ok, so my review... well I am so frustrated. Why, because I know this device could work so much better. Thats the very anoying bit. So to skip back a bit and count 10... the box arrived, unpacked, quick read of the instructions and started to set up. First off I installed the S/W onto my Vista machine (dual core, 4GB ram etc etc) and it went on fine. Then started to compile the media database, which took it about an hour I would say (I have a lot of photos - 12,000+). Once that was done I installed the actual box. Easy to do as I have a homeplug network that runs at 85MB/S. 1x RJ45 and 1xHDMI and I was up and running. Brilliant I thought, all the other reviewers were right.

WRONG...

I noticed that the remote was not working very well... I would press enter, say on videos, and the device acted as though I pressed it 4 or 5 times.. so it opened the video folder, then opened the next folder and then played the first video in that folder.. Hmm. Same with general scrolling. Press up on the main menu and it will move 4 maybe 5 times with 1 press. Sometimes it just keeps going and going and wont stop.

Must be the cheapo batteries me thinks.. junk them and put in some new AAAs.. same problem.

I tried covering the remote LED to see if it was a remote fault but it still does the same thing. Very upset about this. So I start to trawl the net and see if I can fix this. Seems there is a firmware update.. good. I download this.. then the fun begins. Took me about an hour (and 3 memory sticks) to get it to see the .bin file. In the end it did update the F/W. I know this because the menus changed style and I really hoped all would be well.

Sadly no. If anything its worse. 100% unusable in this state. You power up and as soon as you press a button on the remote it jsut takes off scrolling, or if you press enter it just goes off and opens the first file in the last folder it can get into. Hm.

So, last option call up D-Link. Had a little chat with the guy at tech support, he said as I had already done everything they would suggest he says its probably a fault and its got to go back to the seller (amazon).

Wonderuful. I waited 2 weeks for this to come into stock and this is what I get. Well, all is not lost... I just have to hope the replacement will work!!! I really do hope so as if the thing just worked it would be very very good. But at this moment it does not so it gets 2 stars. Sorry.

Lastly, if anyone has any fix for this before I sort out the return in the next 24 hrs or so please reply here!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. works perfectly and easy to setup   October 12, 2008

I had this out of the box and connected to my wireless network (my router only allows access to allowed mac addresses) within minutes.

Out of the box there are a few issues.
1) after setting the devive to 720p ws it reverts to 480p next time it is used.
2)menu can turn green and all washed out

3)volume control does not have a on screen display

The latest firmware from the d-link site fixes all issues but be warned that the update via usb can take 20 mins to finish, whatever you do don't power off the device thinking it has frozen, let it finish.

Once done the device works like a dream. it is easily the best there is. I have had others such as philips streamium, pinnacle etc and they don't even come close to how well this works. There are also a few new plugins such as youtube that allow you to watch videos on your tv from the youtube site.

Overall it does what is says it does. Nice piece of kit with the only downside bing your pc needs to be on and running divx connected.

2 out of 5 stars Great - if it would work   September 29, 2008

This plays back Divx streamed from your PC. Image is good and sound quality is also good. Plays AC3 fine. Would like some more control over the aspect ratio, but overall the best networked divx player i have had.

However, out of the box the remote is useless, I have to keep pressing the buttons 5 or 6 times. It has also now developed a fault after 2 months where the screen is a washed out green.
So its going back. If they can get the build quality right on this then it would be an excellent product.
