As close to the perfect clock radio as I could find! December 14, 2008 Simon Ward (Watford, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently upgraded from the Pure "Bug" DAB clock radio. I finally got fed up with the uncontrollable brightness of the Bug's display. Therefore, for me, the display was very important. Most clock radios have improved the display brightness since the Bug, which is several years old. However, most are still using backlit LCD displays. These have the drawback of never actually being totally black (i.e. they leak light) and poor view angle. Both these factors are important because you do not want your clock radio lighting up the room at night, and you want to be able to read the display both laying in bed looking up at the clock and standing up in the room.
This clock radio solves the display problems other products have by using an OLED display. This solution is head and shoulders above virtually all other clock radios in this respect. The major difference being that there is no backlight. The display emits light only where is is supposed to light up. The result is a display that has perfect black background with clear text readable from any angle. It is also auto-dimming or can be manually set.
My only reservation is the actual lifetime of the OLED display. OLEDs did not previously last as long as other display technologies. Hence, they were typically used on devices such as phones and MP3 players where the display is only on for a relatively short length of time. According to Wikipedia, new OLED displays (at least the green ones) can now last much much longer, so hopefully that will be the case here.
The only other slight downside is the display is relatively small, only having two lines of text. However, the clock in standby uses the full display height, so is easy to read. You can also configure the display options in on mode too. On the plus side, when the program text scrolls, it scrolls a pixel at a time, rather than a character at a time like many other radios. The net result is that the text scrolling is much smother.
Every thing else about this product is very good. The sound quality is very good (given the small unit size - obviously it will not compete with B&W floor standers!). It also has a small bass reflex hole on the back so it will benefit from being slightly away from the wall at the back.
Usability is very good. You have the usual advance features such as weekday only alarms with individually selectable stations and volume. Importantly for anyone that owned The Bug, it also has a nice simple off button (sounds obvious, but if you owned The Bug, you will know how annoying that was!). It has two nice rotary knobs: one for volume and the other for tuning and options that is also push-to-select. Everything you want to do just involves going through a series of simple option so even if you loose the manual, you should not really ever get stuck.
IMO, the design is also very good too in that is manages to be slightly retro whilst still having cutting edge features. If anything, the design is tremendously understated for the specification.
Great sound, lousy clock July 23, 2008 E. Salmon 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
This radio looks and sounds great. But the clock, self-setting digitally, is NOT UP TO SCRATCH! Three minutes behind most of the time. A common or garden cuckoo clock can do better! I bought this item for radio alarm, so disappointing. Also, the sleep mode began to malfunction after a couple of weeks - diagnosed as "Hardware issue". Had to return radio to Pure for a replacement. Pure's Customer Service leaves a lot to be desired.
Very good sound and easy to use: great value January 24, 2008 Bristly Badger (Deep underground) 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
My iconic Sony Digicube has woken me every day for three decades. But it turned 30 this year and was promptly killed by my two year-old. I chose this Tempus-1S over other alternatives because it's compact and attractive, with a wide range of features. You can pay more for the XT version but I have to say I couldn't see what the extra money was really for. With this I can plug in my iPod which is great, the alarms are easy to set, the clock dims well at night and, of course, the sound is excellent. The SnoozeHandle on the top is great and it does two extra things: if you have the display set to full screen clock, the handle brings up the radio station and date if touched while the radio is playing; and at night when the radio is off, touching the SnoozeHandle brightens the clock display which could be handy for the partially-sighted. Everything can be adjusted manually anyway - it's very user friendly. The "natural sounds" are a gimmick really. The "birdsong" is a plaintive robin, the "rainfall" and "small waves" make my wife run for the loo and the "thunderstorm" scares my kids. Neat.
Just gets better December 21, 2007 A. Forbes (Warrington, UK) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
Bought to replace a Sonus going to another family member, this really has turned out to be a significant improvement in terms of the display (cool green with smooth, flowing graphics and auto dimming)that it was a worthy replacement for that alone.
Natural sounds are really rather addictive, especially with the additional stereo speaker attached (although my 'XT' speaker jack requires a little fiddling to work correctly) and the menu is getting longer!
Still a 5 star product though from Pure and would recommend it.
