4 out of 5 stars This really is Life....at times!   May 2, 2006
T. Clarke (UK)
After first listening to the album, I can't say I was blown away at all, or hugely impressed. But as the previous reviewer suggests, it is quite a bit of a grower.
The 1st cd was the weakest for me, and even now I still can't really get into it, as its just so dull at times. I would say tracks 8 to 13 though really get things going - Deep Sea and Monkey Forest being my fave tracks.
Cd 2 is the best cd by far. It starts off brilliantly with I Feel So Fine, and continues with some fine tracks, including the powerful Clear Blue Moon, and X-Tension, and put nicely in the middle of the cd is Hey Little Girl with great vocals/lyrics, and Mindcircus has a good DiscoTeque sound to it. But to be honest, most the cd sounds like it has this theme.
Cd 3 is good in parts, but let down by a few stinkers. As with cd 1, tracks 8-13 seem to be the best again, but the mix of Beautiful here was very dissapointing, though I feel if the original version had been put it, it wouldn't have sounded right with the other songs.
Overall, its a good album for spring/late wintery months, but just isn't consistant enough to be a truly perfect album. But hey, if you find it cheap, you can just stick to Cd2!

4 out of 5 stars A grower   June 2, 2004

At first, I wasn't impressed by Life, but after quite a few listens, it started to grow on me. Its subtleness is a refreshing change to some of the more commercial dance compilations out there.

CD1 begins well with 'not my fault' and a remix of 'pov' then goes down hill. 'sonic empire' and 'on the run' are dull, dull, dull! I always skip 'nothing is' with its drab vocals. Things begin to pick up with 'restless nature' and the last two tracks are very good, particularly 'deep sea.'

On to CD2, easily the best CD of the three. There is one track I skip, 'clear blue moon', but the rest are excellent. The hypnotic 'mindcircus' has a beautiful melody and vocals. 'x-tension' has a grinding bass line and an explosive climax; a real club anthem. The mix into 'kinetic' is superb. Incidentally, Fleming's mixing is effortless throughout, although I'm not too sure about some of his choice of tunes. 'hey little girl' has a great (male!) vocal and 'artifical intelligence' is just too cool.

The final CD suffers with the inclusion of poor tracks such as 'funk-a-tron' and 'bangkok.' My favourites are 'pulsar 2002 remix', 'music non stop' and the remix of 'beautiful' (although I would have preferred the original version). But there are too many duds on this CD, and is by far the weakest.

Life would have been much better if it was just two CDs instead of three. However, it's a quality album, and I wouldn't part with it.

5 out of 5 stars This is not trance, people!!! But a great mix!   June 5, 2002

CD 1 is a classic mix of some of the best new PROGRESSIVE HOUSE sounds out right now. Loader's "Nothing Is" debuted at this years Winter Music Conference in Miami, and is hands down one of the deepest, darkest tracks out. And there aren't a lot of mixes out there with that track, so that alone, in my opinion, is good enough for to buy this collection. But, that isn't all that it offers. The follow-up track to "Nothing Is" is another deep basslined track with unbeliveably sexy vocals (Restless Nature). Other wonderful tracks that appear are Headstrong "Tilt" which is a top track released by one of the best progressive labels in the industry right now, Baroque Records, and Way out West's newest release, Mindcircus. John "00" fleming is usually way to trancy for me, but he really hit the (progressive) nail on the head with this one. Buy it! You will NOT be disappoointed!

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed...!!!   May 14, 2002

After reading the reviews of this cd i thought to myself, 'Hey, this cd can't b too bad' so i went out and bought it. I put it on expecting it to be as good as peoples reviews were, but i was certainly wrong. The songs last too long, they are boring and after a while they all begin to sound much the same. All im going to say is 'Dont be fooled' as this cd is not at all what u expect. A very disappointing buy, one of the worst cd's in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very very nice...but not up with 'Journeys'   April 7, 2002

I got this the moment it came out (no - litterally, i must have been about the tenth person in the shop that day) and i've loved it ever since. '00' Flemming always (without fail) does a brilliant job of mixing, and he's done it again with 'Life'. As with the previous format ('Journeys') the first CD starts off pretty fast but is designed to ease you in. Some good tunes in there, some excellent tunes too. CD2 however, is the one currently stuck in my CD player. CD2 is real trance, a little faster than CD1. It hasn't failed to bring a wicked grin on my face ever. CD3 is again slower than CD2 and yet just as hard. No relaxing chill out stuff here, you have 3.5hrs of dancing, grinning and singing ahead of you. And yet i still feel that 'Journeys' was a better compilation. The songs on that are simply better. There are some very very good tracks here, but there were more on the last GK album. Not at all the fault of the DJ, that's simply how the industry works. You tend to get a load of excellent songs all at once and then only a few before you're hit with another great batch 5-6months later.

It's still an EXCELLENT cd, and well worth buying. I'd really like to give it 4.5 stars, but you can't do that. Marred only by the fact that 'Journeys' had 'better' songs.
