Sublime Brilliance September 4, 2008 S. Templar (Somerset, England) This is an absolutely cracking album. Danny has crafted together a Gem of a mix - the constant quality of the tracks is mindblowing. Love it !
Perfect. Minimal, house, subtle, funky YES! August 13, 2008 J. M. CAULFIELD (Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I can't believe how good this is. I don't usually write reviews but this deserves it! Music is evolving so rapidly it is losing it's edge on one perspective but on the other it is developing into deeper depths. This compilation captures DT's angle on this with his mixing skills and his access to exclusive music. It takes a minimal approach which is very appropriate for today's music scene. You can hear DT's style throughout (almost GU-esque) but on a very subtle level. Anyone who likes or liked DT, progressive or house music looking to get a feel for what it has evolved into and otherwise anyone now today into minimal stuff, this is essential. After a few listens it is seriously addictive. As far as a compilation is concerned, this is the first in a long time that has had such an effect where others have been disappointing! Dom and Roland (DnB) recent podcast noted that music today has lost its ability and allowance to take time, space and develop naturally, it is disappointing that often there is no room for creating the atmosphere that we once had in this field of sound.. what we grew to adore.. certainly what has created me!
This is amazing! Essential to any electronic music fan really! Trust me!
N.B. Patience required!
Danny Tenaglia On Fire! August 7, 2008 S. A. Hutchinson (London, UK) I've been waiting for a new mix from Danny for ages, and this for me is better than the Global Underground CD's he did a few years ago that are also superb. This is a Mix CD to listen to over and over again and yes it does take some repeated listening to aclimatise to his 'new sound' but it is as soulful as ever, just a different manifestation of the totally unique sound that Danny Tenaglia has been creating for many years. The sound quality is also fantastic, and for me this is the closest you will get to experiencing him live. This CD demands repeated listening before making a judgement - I had it on full blast on my bycle yesterday and got home 10 minutes faster than normal due to the drive and power the music has! some of the tracks reminded me of putting a microphone in your stomach whilst you had really bad cramps! THIS IS TWISTED TENAGLIA AT HIS BEST! Sleevenotes are touching as its been a tough old year for him personally (this mix is dedicated to his Mother and Aunt who sadly passed (his Aunt was responsible for turning him on to much diverse music as a child in the 60/70's growing up in Brooklyn) this is something special. BUY IT!
Don't get too excited! August 6, 2008 BlaBla1978 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been looking forwards to a new mix from DT for ages and had to buy it as soon as it came out, hoping that it would be a lot better than the disappointing backtobasics and perhaps even recreate the magic of his Global underground mixes. Unfortunately this isn't for me. As the title suggests this is a dark and minimal "futuristic?" sound that isn't to my taste. If, like me, you prefer his more old school stuff, with the twisted vocals and drums (you know what I mean...), don't get too excited by this release. This is as far away from his "house" mixes as you can get - this isn't "joyful" of "soulful" in the slightest. Even though I do enjoy the darker mixes ala Dave Clarke, this one doesn't have the frenetic energy that I look for in those types of mixes. Maybe I just don't get it yet. I am going to give it a few more listens in case it grows on me but at the moment I'm only prepared to give it three stars as in fairness, there are a couple of instant "wow" moments in there that save it.
