Amazon.co.uk Review To many, New York's Danny Tenaglia is unquestionably the finest DJ in the world--a veritable Goliath of the decks whose penchant for marathon, 19-hour sets is the stuff of legend. For those who've yet to see him in action--over 19 hours or otherwise--this Back to Basics mix from the great man makes a pretty nifty substitute. Over two immaculately-mixed discs, Tenaglia moves through his whole repertoire, from deep, dubby West Coast house and piano-laden US garage to the tougher tribal and minimal progressive sounds he's most famous for. As you'd expect from a man known for his taste making abilities, the track listing reads like a who's who of contemporary, cutting-edge club culture, with recent classics nestling side by side with the freshest, upfront white labels. Some hardened Tenaglia-nuts may balk at the catch-all approach (the Brooklyn-born DJ is more famous for all-out tribal and prog sets than the "from deep to tough" journey here), but this is merely a consequence of the home listening nature of Back to Basics Presents. Either way, this is a fine mix by one of the world's favourite DJs. --Matt Anniss

BEST HOUSE CD IN MY COLLECTION July 5, 2006 Adam Robinson (Bognor Regis, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow! DT brings you into house music oblivion with this excellent mix. The cd eases you in to the groove then just bumps along, tune after tune after tune, all top notch. You can play this cd at a party, an afterparty, in your car, by day, or by night and it will always get your head nodding and toes tapping. Track 7 - David James "A permanent state" is in my opinion arguably the best house music track ever made, it has absolutely everything, and is the icing on the cake in this excellent CD.
An absolute must for any house music fan
Just what we wanted from danny June 6, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There is a god house lovers, the proggressive and tribal master returned in 2002 with this fantastic mixed album. The first cd keeps a more trafitional house feel throughout but the variations really made me trash the house with adrenaline. It's starts really soft with midnight lady into do it now by Dubtribe sound system, picks up slowly in catch the boat but explodes into life when we hear mosaferat with a great mix into narcotic thrust's hit safe form harm followed by an invaluable 7 song mix from permanent state to work it out into live your life with me and after a few more fantastic tunes we hear those great lyrics to be yourself but over contact which is brilliant. Cd 2 has the same pattern but the beat gets harder much faster; after the only lowlight of the album of stop fooling around we hear some fantastic dt style tribal house especially freedom is, a great tune. After the trancy belgian resistance the album goes into overload; we are treated to the finest mixes and songs around as the whole thing finishes with the fantastic terror by fused.
A real breath of fresh air! Buy it Now! November 8, 2002 Mr. I. Svensen (London, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Do it Now. Three words which say it all about this mix. If you don't get up and dance to this compilation you never will. You are presumably dead, or paralyzed from the hairline and down. The CD mixes such beautiful house music and garage with progressive, making me - a proghead - finally understand the beauty of real house! I am mostly lost for words on this one! Just go out and buy it! Do it Now!!!
Undoubtedly one of the most interesting mix comps this year June 12, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In the past I've been somewhat disappointed by some of Danny's other mix compilations, but Back2Basics has reassured my faith in Tenaglia. There seems to be a lot more happening in this compilation than in most of his other Global Underground outings, the tracks are a lot fresher and more upbeat. I am finding it difficult to persuade my cd player to let me take this one out,a fine compilation if you like your house funky and tribal.
THE SORT OF QUALITY YOU'D EXPECT FROM BASICS & TENAGLIA May 14, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
As a frequent buyer of compilation/mix CD's I frequently end up disappointed with purchasing CD's that don't quite add up to the sum of their parts. This, I am pleased to say is exceptional. A lot of thought has gone into this - its not just some pro-tools hash up of the dj's own tunes & his ugly mug on the front. CD1 is a selection of vocal US house moving to a more progessive tip towards the end - great party music. CD2 is deeper, darker stuff which works so well in a club or during a very late session !! carefully annotated track notes by tenaglia take u through each track and there's loads of entertaining guff about B2B.....you could spend your money in worse ways.
