Amazon.co.uk Review Tengalia, the DJ's DJ has always smashed down dance music's divisions by mixing whatever he pleases without losing a smidgeon of musical impact. So it's no surprise that Global Underground: London, a double-CD mixed live in London isn't a fusty, dusty artefact full of novelty songs/tracks. Forever passionate about the music as well as his mixing, his choices are inspired by what really works on the dancefloor. Peace's Divison's "Tribal Funk" is wonderfully voracious and ATFC's "In and Out of My Life" sits just on the right side of "screaming diva" house. By concentrating on subbed out electro house in all it's sweeping orchestral glory, London rocks and soothes in equal measure. There are plenty of blueprints and uplifting twists such as Minimal Funk IV's epic "Definition of House" and Vegas Soul's teasingly groove-oriented "Junk Funk", but that's not all. Tengalia has split the CDs so each one leans towards either house or trance, but never to the detriment of the other. So for the most part, CD 2 is a sexy, blissfully escapist soundtrack and CD 1 above all else is super-funky house. If you own other Tengalia compilations than you already know what his mixes sound like--taut basslines, musical beats with a soulful edge and plenty of extended, glorious breakdowns. If you don't, then this occasionally ethereal, anthemic mix is both banging and astonishing. --Maxine Kabuubi

Deep,melodic,varied,innovative.One of a kind. June 16, 2006 Kratos (Lamia,Greece) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been an avid Global Underground CD collector in the past 5 years, and have listened to every DJ included in the label so far. After getting more 'experienced' in the progressive house & trance genres and having listened to Danny's other GU compilation("Athens"),as well as other albums he's made,I can comfortably say that it is the best CD he has ever released and definitely one of the best GU compilations ,even 6 years after its release.More info:
Disc 1 is the softer, funkier and more melodic part of the mix, beginning with Next Evidence's "Sands of Time",a smooth, soulful, jazzy house number that introduces you nicely to the mix .The 3 next tracks are similar to the style of "Sands Of Time",with nice happy melodies and finger clicking, driving beats. After track 4,things get a bit deeper and more upbeat, but maintaining the soulful driving character of Danny's sound.Highlights include an ASTOUNDING Tenaglia mix of Onephatdeeva's familiar hit"In and out of my life"in which he replaces the vocals from their original'position',resulting in an amazing new sound, and Peace Divisions"Tribal Phunk".The finale of the first CD,Dietrich Schoenemann's "19 Bullets" is simply the acapella part of the original, remixed at the same time with the drum samples of "Tribal Phunk".It's an innovative idea, but nothing special.Overall,Disc 1 is a deep, melodic journey through different genres of house, but I must warn you:It may take a little time to appreciate it.Just make sure you listen with an open mind and then you'll understand.:)
Disc 2 is the darker, more banging part of the mix,in a nod to "Athens"'s equivalent CD,but still it is packed with great melodies and is guaranteed to give you one hell of a time.Beginning with Microworld's "Signals",a track that basically insists of a constantly looped tune for about 10(!)minutes,is certainly an odd choice but don't let it give you any bad ideas about the rest of this awesome, moody set.In terms of quality tunes this is a more solid effort than Disc 1,as almost every single track has this "special" feeling, which is once again the result of Danny's excellent skills. The highlights of this CD are Lando's"Magical Digital Drum",F2's "Dominica",Schiller's "Ruhe" and Evolution's"Phoenix".As I said before,to fully appreciate it,listen with an open mind and accept the "difference" between this and the other GU sets. One of the most magic and bautiful sets I've ever heard.
To Dom Phillips(for those who don't know,he's the guy responsible for writing the comments-sleevenotes on every GU album), this is "a breathtaking journey of finger-clicking techno, wild African grooves and sleazy house". To me,it is a timeless gem that separates the men from the boys in terms of music, and makes you realise why Tenaglia is considered unique in his area.
The Ways of Mixing November 11, 2004 I Was A Kaleidoscope (Staffordshire, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Sooner of later, I could be wrong on this, the apprentice will overtake the master.Native New Yorker Danny has enjoyed years of critical applaud from the media and fans alike, and quite rightly to. The guy helped pioneer that tribal, sexy deep house sound so overplayed by every 2-bit Technics cowboy. But the mastero has hit something that can only be related to the dj equivalent of the writer's block. Sure there's still those big booty shakers (see "Tribal Phunk" Peace Division, "Touched by God" Katcha) but severed up cold and lifeless. It sure don't help that he has adopted the latest toys at his disposal. His over use of the "Kaos Pad" is distracting. Instead of letting the tracks do the talking he over zealously cuts and pastes segments and loops them without any real positive results. This can best be summed up in his ham-fisted attempt to force the prog-tastic Ruhe "Schiller" into I-Ching's "Ways of Love". Painful. Embracing technologies is all very well and good but ripping the heart and soul out of the music is shameful. Throw away the tricks Danny and get back to work on the funk!
best mix of the year March 22, 2001 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Look, anyone who does not like this has absolutely zero appreciation for real dance music. Sorry if that sounds elitist or whatever, but the quality of the tracks, mixing, and programming on this mix puts everything else to shame. It's not an immediate CD and it won't go well with 15 mitsis like a Lisa Pin-Up collection, but thats because its actually good, not a bunch of moronic hoover junk. Simply put, Tenaglia is the best DJ on the planet. Buy it and consider yourself better for owning it.
Boring? March 3, 2001 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
Yep - I'm afraid this didn't really do it for me. After listening to the first CD several times I realised I didn't know what the second half of it sounded like because I'd fallen asleep every time! Yawn. CD 2 is much better but it never really gets going. It's so frustrating trying to find decent dance music these days - why do all the so called super DJ's sell out to commercialism when they make CD's? I mean did Danny Tenaglia really play this set and bring the house down? Or was this some mix GU wanted him to do on a Sunday afternoon after his roast because it might appeal to a wider audience? Hmmmmm. I don't mean to be a bad egg and ruin the star ratings!
A superb cocktail of deep, late night grooves February 5, 2001 scottherbie@aol.com (London) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
In most of his sets Danny Tenaglia leans away from the mainstream, creating his own individual sound. This Global Underground release is no exception. The first CD is a little more funky, with a touch of US Garage. Minimal Funk IV's 'Definition of House' and ATFC Presents Onephatdeeva's 'In and Out of My Life' represent a more housey, feel good vibe. The second CD has a more progressive and trancy feel to it that is summed up by track 9 - Ruhe by Schiller. Both begin with a tribal sound that becomes a little more soulful later on. Tenaglia takes the listener on a journey that continues on between the two CD's, managing to capture the unmistakeable essence of deep, dark house ........ I particularly enjoyed this CD and would recommend it to all true fans of house. It's a long way from the sort of dance that's heard in the charts so if that is what you are looking for then this is something to avoid. If deep house is your scene then this is a great choice!
