Outstanding book for IRB members, scientists, and patients deliberating about whether to volunteer their own participation in a clinical trial or in a research study.

Well-written guide for understanding what goes into the determination of whether a particular research study should be approved to be conducted in humans. The book's title suggests that this book is a guidebook for members of institutional review boards who approve or reject research studies, but the book is much more. It should be considered a guide for anyone interested in understanding (1) what research in humans is all about, (2) how decisions are made regarding whether a study is to be approved or rejected, (3) how mistakes can be avoided in such decisions, and (4) how investigators can do more to optimally protect study participants in all phases of research.

The book is very readable and its concepts are very accessible to the non-scientist. For many, this book provides the first access to understanding how research in humans is evaluated prior to a research study is approved to enroll study volunteers, why certain research studies proposed to be done in humans are rejected, and what can be done to optimally protect study volunteers at all times.
