Pity it isn't a 'best of' album April 22, 2007 Alan (Stafford, United Kingdom) Those of you who enjoy listening to trance and have an eye for excellent DJs will know all about Armin Van Buuren. Some of this songs have been purely genius and extremely uplifting; I refer to the like of Shivers and Burned With Desire. The latter is found on this album, but Shivers is not, and I cannot believe that Armin would choose to celebrate his 10 Years of mainstream existance without including it. The remix does appear, and is a fascinating addition to the album however. Rather than 10 Years offering an ultimate best of Armin's past, it explores all corners of his music creating career. We have the hardest trance, like Intruder with the hard trance master M.I.K.E, to his more subdued and chilled summer evening numbers, for example Touch Me. Listening to all of the songs, and admittedly not owning too many of them prior to purchasing this album, I was amazed at the amount of variation. It allows you form opinions, and mine is this: I feel Armin's best efforts arise from a mix of wonderous keyboard sounds that he mixes so successfully, and some sparkling vocals, mainly provided by Justine Suissa. Burned With Desire is one such example. Whilst the harder, and often none vocal songs are unique in their own right, I don't feel that they portray Armin's skills as a music creator quite as well. It is unusual for me to drift away from the music whilst listening to it rather than towards it, which is what a few of these do. Intruder, incidentally, was a real let down. But the latter example is in the minority. Armin has such an eye for craft, and even if some of the songs don't match your taste, every single one has to be admired for it's complexity and skillful balance.
The best CD from Armin in a long time!!!!!!!! February 6, 2007 plastic boy (scotland) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that Armins last few releases, either Shivers or 76 or all of his recent State of Trance complitations over the last 3 or 4 years, have been good, but I just miss the sound that he used to play in his sets from about 99. The tunes he played back then seem to be a lot harder and more in your face than his last few compilations. I'm not trying to sound arrogant, obviously Armin chooses what direction he want's his DJ'ing to reflect, it's just my own opinion!!!!!
Anyway, back to this new double CD, 10 Years, it's so good to finally get my hands on some of the unmixed 12"'s he's released since the time of Blue Fear!!!!!!!
Personal favourites from the first CD would have to be Love You More and The Rising Star mix of Burned With Desire. When I first got his artist album 76, the chilled version of Burned With Desire was instantly my favourite tune on the CD but I just think that the Rising Star remix takes it to a great new level. Also, I'm so glad to finally get my hands on the Gaia - 4 Elements track!!!! Loved it when I first heard it on his very first State of Trance mix!!!!!
From the second CD, my favourites are Zocalo, the tune he made with Gabriel and Dresden. They are 2 of the best producers around and it's good top hear the collaboration with Armin.
Also Sunspot, done with Airwave and Intruder that he did with M.I.K.E.!!!!!!!!
Go out and buy it as soon as you get the chance!!!!!!
Armin goes back to what he's best at February 5, 2007 I. R. Walker 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After the experimental shivers album Armin has decided to go back over his collection and release all those tunes that his fans have wanted in there full un mixed glory. Theres a lot of history here with absoloutely amazing trance anthems. The first disc is especially trancy with the highlights being sail, love you more, 4 elements, communication part 3 and the trance remix of burned with desire. The second disc is a bit more hit and miss with sum suspect mixes of classic songs such as the wall of sound and shivers remixes. Notable ommisions from this album are eternity by armin and tiesto, the awesome instrumental version of shivers which i personally think should hav been included instead of the remix and the live versions of serenity and hymne which included piano work from jan vayne, but even with these missed out tracks the album is still a joy to listen and a must for ne trance fan.
A Euphoric Journey December 16, 2006 Gareth Hill (Cumbria, UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
A must for any trance fan, especially those who may have lost heart with the scene but are toying with the idea of a comeback. Tiesto took over as the dutch master from Ferry Corsten, but Armin now seems to be lighting the path. The album includes recent hits such as Love You More ft. Racoon and the excellent Yet Another Day with Ray Wilson, as well as several potential future classics itching to be discovered. Lovers of the trance scene when it was it its peak between 1998 and 2000 will be unable to hold back the spine-tingling effect of Communication with its epic build up and breakdown and many beautiful dancefloor memories will come rushing back upon feeling the vocals of the Sound of Goodbye, originally released under the guise of Perpetuous Dreamer and Touch Me also released earlier under the appropriate name of Rising Star. Many more tracks are to be enjoyed including arguably one of the best build-ups in trance, Clear Blue Moon. A superb 'highlights' album from a fantastic DJ and producer.
