4 out of 5 stars (Above &) Beyond Words   January 10, 2006

It's never good to start off a review by immediately alienating some of your potential target audience, but my unforgiving stubbornness to give this platter a 'miserly' 4-star will no doubt have many a glow stick waver up in arms.

You see my exposure to the series hasn't been chronological. This makes a big difference. Whilst this still ranks as a fine mixed overview of the early Anjunabeats catalogue it has a few floors in its design.

The inclusion to start the ball rolling with the Madonna remix is one of commercial reasons only (understandable for a, then, fledgling label), especially as you consider it's not even an Anjunabeats release. Not only that, it gives the mix a rather ominous opening, which is a shame. Likewise things get padded out in the midsection with the silly pseudo-operatic sampling Rollerball - Albinoni.

Negatives aside, where things really fly are during the huge vocal numbers. Above & Beyond - Far From In Love yearns for a lost love, whilst the driving OceanLab - Sky Falls Down gets a sympathetic Armin van Buuren work over that whilst uplifting, stays just the right side of the cheese border. Likewise Signum's thumping remix of OceanLab - Beautiful Together ends the set in way that makes you yearn for more, and yes, greater things.

Whilst it lacks the sheer weight of tunes of volume two and the thoughtfulness of number three, this is still an extremely attractive proposition to all "trance-heads" and to those, like myself, that had forgotten that uplifting melodies could ever be this good again.

Think of all your favourite 1999 - 2000 trance tracks. Stick them all in the blender, pour them out, and - they come out sounding even better! These tracks are NOT trance's greatest hits - but they should certainly be. Some tracks remind you of things you've heard before and really liked, but with a little modern twist. Bears repeated listening and doesn't sound dated. Extremely melodic and catchy - shades of Corsten, Van Buuren, Tiesto, Airwave, the Ahead album, the more mainstream trancy Gatecrasher and Euphoria series - but without the poppy fillers of the latter 2. Dreamy female vocals now and again weave in and out. Big, spacey, confident, euphoric tunes. No wimps with synths. One good thing - it starts beaty and rhythmic - and then just keeps going and going and going - no slowing down in the middle for a breather. Just when you think it has to run out of steam and stop for a bit, the next tune starts and is always a corker! On and on for almost 80 mins. Highly rec for mainstream, tuneful, well-produced trance fans. No cheese - just the finest premium quality music.
Volume 2 just as good! Hard to choose between them. If you can't decide, buy the cheapest - it will convert you to the other one.

5 out of 5 stars BEST TRANCE MIX OF 2003 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   November 18, 2003

Anjuna is one of the best trance labels around, supported by djs like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren and Ferry Corsten. This cd contains all the best tunes from ANJUNA label with the mix being done by Above & Beyond. You can find some of the best vocal trance tracks like "Far from in love" and "Sky falls down" (Armin Van Buuren remix), progressive beats like "Razorfish" or "Volume one" and much more. My favorite track is the "Albinoni adagio" remixed by Above & beyond with the addition of gorgeous opera vocals. You can also find a refined version of the Above & Beyond remix of "What it feels like for a girl" by Madonna, this one sounds better than the single version, the sounds are more spacy and entrancing. In the booklet there's also a little story for each track. Top class!!!
